I was born and raised in Southern California and now currently live in Irvine. Ninety-five percent of my friends are either from the East Coast or Central United States. There is a reason for this. Most the people that I come in contact with in Southern California exhibit the very traits your question highlights (shallow materialistic). I will highlight each behavioural trait to help you better understand.................................................................
1. Material Possessions
Whether they can afford these items (cars for example) or
not, most Southern Californians go to great lengths to
"impress" or "fit in". Southern California definitely has it's
fair share of pseudo-rich. However, as long as the appearance
of wealth is present, that is all that seems to matter to most
Southern Californians.
2. Conversation..........................................................................
Within the first two minutes of engaging in conversation with
most Southern Californians you will feel like you are a job
interviewer accepting a resume. The conversation will usually
consist of bullet statements concerning job status (somehow
they will slip in their annual income), what kind of car they own,
etc. etc. etc. They make sure that all the bases (usually the
financial ones ) are covered. Very seldom will you engage in
conversation and not have the above criteria covered within
those first few moments.
3. Physical Appearance
I don't think I need to go into too much detail about this one.
Whatever you've heard, it's probably all true.
Now as you probably already know, there are exceptions to any rule. However, it is my opinion that the majority of Southern Californians are rude and pretentious.

It sure seems like Southern California has more than its fair share, but there's a lot of shallow and materialistic people everywhere, honestly.
What's interesting about the Los Angeles area is that it appears to give some people a sort of permission to act badly. A few people have complimented my manner of dress, only to follow it up by saying things like, "I wish I could wear long skirts like that, but when you live in LA, you just can't dress modestly, or shop in thrift stores." I had one person tell me the other day that she wishes she could decide not to swear in front of her young child, but you just can't do that and live in LA. Not sure why, since my parents manage it just fine, and they're in Laguna Beach. It's like the rest of the planet expects Southern Californians to be shallow and materialistic, so they feel compelled to live up to that expectation.
My best guess is there's a lot of gullible in the world, and the ones who live in Southern California tend to get all caught up in keeping up with that Hollywood image that everybody expects.

Having lived in Southern California for the majority of my life I must sadly report that for a lot of people this seems to be true. People exhibit no common sense in the things they do and use other people's stuff as the yardstick by which to measure their life. Yes, sad but true. Many folks here are very plastic and they don't seem to appreciate the things that they do have nor do they seem to understand that they can be taken away in a heartbeat.

Some are some aren't. It's not a lot different than it is everywhere else. I think that there is more pressure in the LA area to wear the right things and be seen at the right places. Get outside of that area and it isn't like that. I can only speak for SoCal because that's where I live. NorCal is a whole other beast.

No. I'm from Southern Califonia, and no I'm not shallow and materialistic. Some are but some aren't. About 40% of people I know are shallow. But there aren't so much. Some people are nice and smart. Not all of them are shallow so don't assume that all of them are.

My Aunt was , and so were all her neighbors. But on a whole if it gets hot then over half of California will melt and talk about spontaneous combusttion. Get it "bust". they are all fake and by rights they can afford to be have to look pretty in the Cali sun. If you take out some of the bodies original cells well maybe the brain got fried under the anasthesia to put all that rubber in them butts.

It's not just Southern California that's materialistic, rude, and shallow anymore, it's California. Period.
True story:
I was at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport flying home to California. The folks waiting at the gate for the Florida flight were mostly families. They seemed very unpretentious, sitting on the floor, wearing t-shirts, drinking coffee, chatting it up, and what not.
So I turn the corner and there was the L.A. flight. Folks were definitely "dressed up". We had one couple adjusting their cashmere scarfs. Another woman had sunglasses on (it was raining outside), a fancy handbag, and was obviously taking up two seats in order to "pose" to passerby. One preppie guy was running his fingers through his blonde hightlighted hair and apparently admiring his own body. And every other person was crossing their legs and staring at each other in this very hostile, stand-offish manner.
I finally came to my gate (for San Francisco), hoping that this bunch would revive my faith in California. No such luck. Everyone - men and women alike - had their expensive laptops out, trying to outdo each other in the "look-like-a-serious-CEO" game. One guy kept on looking at his brand name watch impatiently despite the fact that there was a clock in front of where he was sitting. No eye contact. When the flight finally boarded, there was one older lady struggling with her luggage, no one gave her a second thought.

Yes and no. There are alot of very pretty people who are big fish in their small little ponds who come here - only to realise that everyone else is pretty too. They all have a very "Me first" attitude. Then there are the artists/creatives/writers - normal people who you can converse with, just like any other city. It's a strange sunny place.
