My suggestion would be to RENT a board and actually go out a few times and see if you even like it BEFORE you invest money in a board.

Renting is a good idea, but also consider buying a used board. Surf shops almost always have a used board section, you can check the classifieds, or Craigs List, or E Bay, or even garage sales. That way you have a board and you don't need to go thru the hassle of renting every time you want to surf.

Used to surf semi pro, a long time ago. I owned an Ocean Side which was my favorite. Start with one AT LEAST as long as the tip of your finger with your arm streched straight up. Wide rails are good too (the edge of the board is not real skinny or narrow). Having a leash on it, although it can be dangerous, makes recovery a lot easire. Hope this helps a little. Now help me find a red and white one piece swimsuit that looks likea scuba diving flag!!!

since you are just learning, you'll probably want to ride a foam board until you can stand up... if you take some surf lessons you can do that, plus you can experiment with any number of other boards that the instructor has... you can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time with surfing lessons.
you could also buy a used foam board to get started, then sell it later for a longboard.

My advice would be to rent a few different boards. There are plenty of shops that will rent out boards. It also depends on what style you want to surf? To like to ride or do you want to do more "shredding"?
Long boards make for good rides and are easier to learn on. Short boards generally are for more turns and carving.
You could try out both to see what you like and then make a purchase from the experience you have.

i would say get a longboard like between 8'0" and 9'0" and the wider it is the more stable and easier to stand up on it is. the same thing goes for the length, the longer the board the easier it is. I like al merrick's but they are really expensive so i would go for a loyd surf board they are the same quality just less expensive. either way you should definately get a longboard, no shortboards!

I'll tell ya what, if you've never surfed before, don't buy a board right away. There usually are places of business that rent out surf boards. That's what I did. Let me tell you, surfing is hard as hell. That's why I would advise you to rent instead of buy right away.

START WITH A SHORT BOARD AND JUST GET IN THERE, AND U COULD ALSO WATCH SOME SURFING VIDEOS TO GIVE U AN IDEA OF WHAT TO DO. NOTHING BEATS THE BEGINNING OF LEARNING, IT GIVES U A RUSH TO KEEP GOING.
