People want to change the world and make it better, but they don't want to change their lifestyles and give up things it would be too hard for them. That's why nothing gets done.

Because people only take notice when they are about to get hurt personally. Depleting the ozone layer will lead to an increase of ultraviolet radiation reaching earth. Now this wasn't really alarming to most people until people started to add the words "skin cancer" to that sentence, and suddenly people started to take notice. But not everyone cares, or takes notice. Nor to they actually want to link their everyday activities with harming of the environment - they would rather stay in the dark. Additionally, we don't want to change the lifestyles we have come to expect. Every convenience we have we don't want to lose - people have a hard time doing things for the greater good, especially when they don't know if it will have any effect or not. These are the kinds of decisions that the common person leaves up to governments, regardless if they like the outcome. So until something happens on a greater scale, this duality will continue - but it IS outrage and knowledge that will fuel the eventually change. Promoting education and abolishing ignorance is the key to our survival.

We are a population obsessed with convenience. Once "green" choices become cheaper or easier than the current choices, the general population will support them. It may be sad, but it's a fact. So, let's spend more energy (no pun intended) on finding marketable green solutions, and less on trying to convince the SUV drivers to get a conscience.

... because "talk is cheap" . to take serious action on the other hand ... well we'd actually have to "break a sweat"..... no likes to change their routine... we'd rather die first!... during this ever increasing gasoline crises over the past..1,2,3 years.. i never heard even 1 elected official suggest ,let alone insist on the enforcement of EXISTING speed limits which would reduce consumption of fuel... not once!... you'd think the administration would have insisted on at least that much to help out the war effort.. instead they said "go about business as usual" we'll take care of the war"... during ww2 the government WANTED, & UNDERSTOOD it was importamt for everyone to be involved....if your not part of the solution you are deffinately part of the problem...but i'm just "saying"thats all... but as my brother used to say , "talk is cheap, i want action !"

Talking costs nothing, while we do some thing to protect our environment, we have to give up most of our day to day facilities. Though firecrackers are not facilities but we fire them to show our madness in joy.

I don't celebrate the 4th of July because I think fireworks are dumb. I stay at home, cook dinner, watch a movie and sleep in my freedom bed.
:D

Life is being celebrated as well as our freedoms. We have a choice to help our environment or not. I would prefer to help it. Using long lasting energy efficient light-bulbs reduces electrical demands. Get the idea?

I have thought about that for decades too.
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!"
I also think cutting christmas trees down for two weeks of "holiday" cheer and sentimentality is stupid too. We need every tree on the earth to help keep the earth cooler and the air fresher!
