Find a breeder, go look at parents, they should be friendly healthy and nice. Temperament is everything. Find out if they are barkers, whiners, they do this really. Do they pay attention to their owners, really listen, do they mind well.? What you see in the parents is what you will get. Pick the puppy that picks you. Do not choose the one that hangs back or cowers. A barker is afraid. and could be a biter later. They are very good dogs, but must be trained and never abused or hit. Love and patience, a good obedience class.is a must. 4 mo. is a good time to start. You can get a good dog, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune, If you want a family pet, and protector with a level head, a shepard is a good pick.Make sure the parents have been Xrayed for hip displaysia. and over 2 yrs old. This is a big problem with this breed.

If you want a purebred.. then you would have to go to a purebred German Shepherd dog breeder and pay lots of dollars.
If you want a German shepherd that may not be pure,,,, then go to the newspaper and look for German Shepherds for sale and/or for give away to a good home.... OR
Go to the office of some local vets and they will always have lists/pictures of various dogs that are to be given to good homes.. etc.

i think you should go to a shelter. Thousands of dogs are euthanized each day due to irresponsilbe owners who allow their pets to indiscriminately reproduce and generate more offspring than can be placed as pets. While you certainly can find purebred German Shepherds at a shelter, I heartily recommend you get a mixed breed dog. There are always shepherd mixes available. The benefits? A mixed breed typically has fewer health issues than purebreds. There are a number of health conditions that typically affect pure Shepherds, and by getting a mix, you lessen your chances of having to deal with that.
Never buy a dog from a pet store if you can avoid it.

I got my Pomeranian from a breeder that I found via the Internet. Its a good place to find pedigree dogs. You just have to be careful when checking their credentials.....some breeders can mistreat their dogs and produce unhealthy pups. But, the pom I got on line was fine....where as the one I bought later from a pet store ended up dying from health related problems.

If you have the money, go to a professional breeder or search for a dog online. If you dont have the money but you have a big heart then go to the animal shelter.

From a certified breeder NOT A PUPPY MILL because the dog at puppy mills will have health problems. Try this site for certified breeders in your area.
