Victor Steam (1723-1774) - Englishman, very short, born with no body hair at all. Attempted the fruit engine, the cat engine, and the rubbish engine before striking it rich with his "hot water pumper," as it was originally called. Ironically, Steam was crushed by the first first vehicle to utilize his creation, a single person trackless-train called "The Steamer."

NeO Anderson is right. Hero, a Greek living in Alexandria, invented a steam engine consisting of a metal container of water pivoted on a vertical axis above a fire, with two pipes sticking out. When the water boiled, the steam shooting out made the container spin like a Catherine wheel. The Greeks were great thinkers but they weren't into engineering. If they had been and they'd developed Hero's invention, perhaps the Industrial Revolution would have happened 2000 years earlier.

but Socrates (i believe or one of those funny Greeks) invented the steam engine back in the day... and it was on a metal container filled with water, with two pipes sticking out of it, hanging on a wire or string held over a fire... it would spin at the water turned to steam and escaped...
