I know, beer does sound a little odd with a BBQ,but several of my husband's Aunts who will be there are expecting wine.

Glad this isn't another "$5 - $10" wine question. For BBQ, you need to go one of two directions;

A) something big, flavorful and juicy to stand up to all the strong flavors, like a high-end zinfandel from Ridge (geyserville or lytton springs), Ravenswood (any single vineyard - not vintners blend) or Biale. Nothing more American than BBQ, and no wine more American than big red Zin. Cabernet, Merlot, and Pinot Noir won't cut it; good Aussie or California Shiraz can, such as Amon Ra or Pax Obsidian.

B) Clean, light and refreshing, to wash everything down and keep you cool in the summer heat. If you go this route, consider:

- Champagne, surprisingly good (a great substitute for beer) and you can find a huge, high quality selection at that price - try Billecart-Salmon.

- High end DRY blush wine like Bonny Doon Vin Gris (nothing like cheap, sweet white zin) served cold, or something similar from the southern Rhone, such as Tavel (these are all under $20, but high quality).

- Whites from Alsace, like Trimbach Pinot Blanc, are very light, fruity and clean without being sweet or watery, and work very well in hot weather with strong flavors. Again. these will be in the $15 - $25 range, but very nice.

Zinfandel is a good combination with BBQ. Ravenswood is famous for zinfandels starting at $12 up to $40. Visit the website www.ravenswood-wine.com. These are the folks from No wimpy wines and Zinfomania (a BBQ promotion tour for Zinfandels).

Either Red Zinfandel from California or Shiraz from Australia would be great with BBQ. If you want a white wine, try Gewurztraminer from either Germany or Canada.

Someone suggested Zinfandel from Ravenswood - DEFINITELY! They make amazing Red Zinfandel's and all of them are under $45 dollars a bottle Canadian so wherever you are the price will probably be lower than that.

BBQ and wine? Don't think so. Get some beer. If you are gonna eat BBQ you need beer. No use being pretentious when you have meat sticking out of your teeth and sauce on your face.

What kind of meat are you cooking? If it is fish or chicken, a white wine would be ideal. Red wine for red meat. Now as for what variety or region to choose, there are many different choices. If you want good "cheap" wine go to Trader Joe's if you have one around. They have really good wine starting at $8/bottle. Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot
Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvion

About $12 a bottle at a liquor store, $7 a bottle at Trader Joes

Make sure you get the Grand Estates, not the Valley.

$50? A wine under $10 would suffice.The rule of: red for beef and white for chicken? I say drink what you like and enjoy.
