Many times the initial consultation is free. The lawyer would want to know if you have a case and if he can stand to make a lot of money off it. Check around with a few and see how it stacks up.

I'll add to the above, that there are a lot of public shows that have the "Ask the Lawyer" segments. Some talking phone books have answers to a lot of common questions.
If there is a law school in your area, sometimes you can receive help through the University.

Most Attorneys have a free intial consultation, as to whether they dispense legal advice at that meeting it depends on the attorney.

You will find lawyers, including me, who freely answer questions. Unless you pay me for it, it is only information. For an attorney-client relationship and legal advice, you have to pay me something.
