Yes, you can throw them away. HOWEVER, my question is how many of them do you have and what kind are they. If you have a bunch of 3.5 floppy disks, and the data that was on them previously isn't sensitive or confidential, formatting the disks and donating them to a local school would save them from ending up in land fills and put them to good use. Just a thought... :)

3.5 disks:break off the metal part, then open them up. Put fingerprints all over the black disk. This makes sure nobody can ever use it again or find info on it (it actually destroys the disk). Then crumple it up like paper and throw it away. If you're looking to recycle, you may be able to recycle the plastic part.
5 inch disks: if you even have one of these, just touch the disk part inside the sleeve. That destroys it, then throw it away.

You can destroy the disks in a functional manner by applying glue or fingernail polish to the inside film. This should make data unrecoverable. As far as disposing of them check for the nearest e-waste disposal center in your state.

Open them up and look at the insides. It's fun and you might be able to do someting creative with them. You could use them for an arts and crafts project. Or you could just throw them away.
