I ask because most housing laws say you can't discriminate against national origin. I believe we should not be able to rent to anyone without papers but many apartments do

I believe some towns are making it law. There is a law that you can't harbor a crimal-that is country wide-and it could be used if someone wanted too-it is still on the books.
I believe outcry of certain towns-due to money problems have brought this forward.
I think most landlords will rent out if you don't give them problems. Many are happy with their tenents. Slumlords could care less.
Will this be a bigger issue-maybe-maybe not. I think it will depend on how tenants behave (so far I don't hear much here) and towns with money problems.

I was listening to the "Glenn Beck Program" on the radio the other day, and he was saying that the mayor in some PA town is fining land lords and business owners for hiring illegal immigrants. The town will be known as a racist town, but I believe that the mayor is doing what he can to help with the problem. To answer you question, I think it all depends on where you live. For the most part as of right now I don't think you will get into any kind of trouble you will just lose their business if they get deported. But I am not totally sure on that.

I don't think there is a law specifically against it. But they are here illegally and so you can't do anything to them. If they trash your house or stop paying rent, you can't sue them and they can't be taken to jail. At worst they will be deported and come back at another time, but you will still be out the damage or lost rent.

Since they don't have a social security number, you can't even put a mark against their credit record. Its as if they don't even exist in this country.

Maybe knowingly, I'm not sure.

I know that a couple of towns in PA are in the process of putting laws in place requiring landlords to check on immigration status. There was going to be one on the San Bernardino ballot but the person who collected signatures calculated how many to collect improperly.

You should check the locality.

Yes, so if your going to be doing it. You better know just what your getting yourself, because in the eyes of the law, you will get into trouble for this if they ever find out.

If you know that they are in this country illegally, then yes, it's illegal to rent to them.
