To me, being religious means that you follow the tenets of your religion. You are concerned with the physical aspects of your belief system. Take Christianity as an example. A religious person would go to church every Sunday, make sure that the sanctuary is clean, set up the cloths and such on the altar, etc etc etc. A religious person is concerned with all the bells and whistles that make up an organized religion.

A spiritual person isn't that concerned with the bells and whistles of a religion. A spiritual person's focus is on God (again using Christianity as an example). A spiritual person believes that God is in your heart, not in a building. Spiritual people think that if you have God in your heart and keep His word, then you don't need all the claptrap and glitz of an organized religion.

Being religious is doing things to be noticed and has nothing to do with how they are inside. Being spiritual means that you do things whether you get noticed or not.

Jesus in the people made this point:
Many of the religious leaders of his day would go to great pains to show that they pray or that they are fasting or whatever. He said that when we pray we are not to be showy. When we fast, we should not say anything or change our appearance so others will know what we are doing. There are many other examples but these should suffice.

I tend towards the nonshowy or spiritual side.

I consider myself spiritual. I do not follow a particular religion. I believe that the difference is that religion is an organized group with its own dogma and doctrine. Being spiritual is believing in God, but coming to your own conclusions with personal study and an open mind to others beliefs, and not simply taking the word of another without question.

Being spiritual is being aware of the reality of spiritual truth. Being religious is to be distracted from the awareness of spiritual truth by a set of beliefs that attempt to (and often fail to) explain this spiritual truth.

The term spiritual I believe is more often used when one feels personal in their belief. Religion -seems more corporate.
When a person is "born again" their belief becomes extremely personal-not necessarily private.

I would asume that religious would mean that you worship a god since that is the definition of a religion. A spiritual person does not necessarliy have a god to worship.

I am Buddhist and therefore have no god so I suppose that this would make me spiritual

Religious means you observe rules (the ones for your own religion). Spiritual mean you truly love the Lord for who he is and not what he can do for you and that you understand his blessings in your life.

Being spiritual means you believe in a higher reality than mortal existence.

If you are religious, you express that spirituality by following the teachings of one religion or another.

religious is when you follow or participate in a set doctrine that is usually formatted under a given name, such as Catholic, or Buddhist, or Islam, etc... spiritual is when you believe in certain "spiritual" rules, such as "if I do good, I'm gonna receive good" or "this is immoral" but don't follow an established doctrine with other people that called it a name.
