Use a true system diagnostic tool, that runs outside of the installed Operating System. You download DSL or Knoppix, as they boot in the CDrom, report all the details in a flowing script.
After booted, you open a console, and scroll through the output of dmesg

If you go into device manager, that will tell you if there are any problems. Click start, right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager.
Also if you have a hp computer, they have a system health check that you can run right off their web site or in your help and support, which can be found in the start menu.

Assuming Windows XP, click on Start, Control Panel, System. Click on the Hardware tab, Device Manager button.
Also, click on Start, Run, type "dxdiag" (without the quotes), and OK.
Another: click Start, Run, type "winmsd" and OK button.

SiSoft Sandra. Don't know if it does all you're looking for, but it's a great start.
