It seems like everytime I eat ice cream or yogurt. I get mucus and a sore throat. I guess I am lactose intolerant. The last time I ate three scoops of ice cream, I felt really ill. I had a headache, cold, and serious congestion.

I enjoy eating soy ice creams and other non-dairy health food alternatives. But, sometimes I have the taste for eating the real "ice cream" or "yogurt" every now and then.

Is there anything that I can do to enjoy real dairy ice cream and not have to feel sick after I eat it.

Lactose intolerance is when a person's body doesn't produce enough lactase, the enzyme needed to digest dairy products. If you were lactose intolerant, you would probably have gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. If you are lactose-intolerant, you can buy pills to help you digest dairy products, such as Lactaid. You would find them in the drug store, near the antacids. However, if you do not have gastrointestinal symptoms, your problem may not be due to a shortage of lactase, and in that case those pills (or lactase-free dairy products) probably wouldn't help. You could always go to the doctor and be tested for lactose intolerance, if you're not sure.

An actual allergy to milk is different. Allergies are related to the immune system, not the digestive system like lactose intolerance. An allergist can test you to see if you have a milk allergy.
Dairy products can also step up mucus production, and if someone is prone to respiratory problems such as a sinus condition, dairy can aggravate the problem, even if they are neither allergic nor lactose intolerant.

I am lactose intolerant also, but I find I can have some without adverse effect. Play around with it and if you don't eat any other dairy on a particular day, you might be able to have a scoop or two without a problem. It's a trial and error process.

There are some pills you can take but I can't remember the names. There are over the counter. You are supposed to take them BEFORE eating dairy products so you don't get those effects. I think you must have an allergy to milk products though.

You more than likely do have a dairy allergy, you should try eating sherbet ice cream. For one regular ice cream is one of the MOST fattening & cholesterol filled things you can put in your body, and sherbet is naturally fat free.

Try Lactaid Scoopfuls Ice Cream. If you can't find it in stores, you can buy it off Amazon.
