25 When the man saw that he could not gain the advantage over Jacob, he touched his hip socket; that put Jacob' s hip out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." 27 And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28 Then he said, "Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but instead Israel, for you have wrestled with Elohim and with men, and have prevailed." (Genesis 32:25-28)

some may say this wasnt god but an angel that jacob wrestled with but Elohim refers to the god of the isrealites many times in the bible, and the name he gives to Jacob (Israel) means "wrestles with God."

So what gives?

By choosing to do so and take make another part of His plan known. To see if Jacob was to give up, which he did not do. It was more for Jacob that God had done so.

God wrestle with Jacob to see what Jacob was made out of. God didn't loose to Jacob, he was only testing him. Jacob was afraid of his brother and had anxieties over his brother.. God wants can-do type of people.

Jesus (not God himself) was trying not to hurt the man - but when he wouldnt let go he zapped him. Thats a crude way to put it -but thats the way it was.

I mean, think of some weak guy trying to wrestle you down, and you really don't want to hurt him because you might accidentally kill him and he wont let go. So you do the next best thing and cause him a little pain.

Because Jacob wanted his own freedom. And something to hold on to.

I think God won the match, but that loser Jacob still wouldn't let go.
