Most pre-owned certified cars for sale by dealers are the returns off of three year leases, and they only keep the best ones, as they normally offer extended warranties on them.
If you aren't interested in keeping up with the Jones as far as being the first one on your block to have the latest model, they are great deals. You can get a great luxury cars for less than half the price and a same as new bumper to bumper warranty for 2- 3 years. The real question is why wouldn't you do it?

PS
Have read some of the answers below against buying a "certified" used car and all I can say is that ignorance abounds on this site

I bought a certified used car, Jeep Liberty from a Toyota dealer. I can't say it was a good experience. We had a starter issue that happened within a day of buying ($750 item I found out), they really gave us the run around about fixing the problem (wanted us to pay half), but in the long run we had to really hassle them to do it, and they did about 1 month later, when we finally made it to the owner, he said no problem and it was done. Though they did give us a hassle, we are paying a whole lot less than a new one, it's a 2002 and is in wonderful shape, I really am happy with it now. Just make sure it is a reputable dealer that you know will stand behind their word.

It depends on how much money you have to spend. You usually get a better rate a new car .Certified used cars carry the warranty of a new car. Buy the certified used car and save some money.

depends on if you want the headache, or someone Else's. The good thing is buying off a lot NEW they take care of you...Might lose some money, but I think worth it in the long run....Used, you buy someone Else's problems you don't even know what are until you get stuck in some deserted unknown area...So use your head....You get what ya pay for. :)

it works both ways if bought from a car showroom. I have both and I have had more trouble with the new one then the second hand. I advise to have a good look at the old one and test it before buying.
