You need to reformat your hard drive. When you boot up with the Windows XP CD, it will automatically take you to setup and the instructions are self explanatory. Make sure you set your BIOS settings to boot up your CD rom drive before your hard drive. Restart your computer with the CD in your CD drive.
To format your harddrive you will need to get a recovery disc or a Windows CD.
No boot disc is necessary unless you are trying to install Windows 95.
The windows XP CD will partition your harddrive and it will wipe out your memory and start from fresh.
Make sure you make a backup before you install Windows XP.

1. put the windows XP cd in your cd-rom drive.
2. reset your PC and make sure its set to boot from CD in the BIOS (normally you just can keep hitting the delete key when its booting up) unless you have a compaq or something. it will tell you what key on the 1st screen right when your PC boots up
3.when it says press any key to boot from CD lol .... press any key.
4.Follow the instructions on the screen. it will walk you through the installation.
Good luck :)
ps. I'm an IT professional if you have any questions just ask

If you have the xp update version, just install it. If it is the full version then you will have to reformat the hard drive to install it.
if further info is required repost the question or email me at perleo@yahoo.com, I have three experts here at home who do nothing but computers.

You put the windowsxp cd-rom into the cd-rom drive, you reboot the computer and boot from the windowsxp cd-rom, you reformat your hard drive with ntsf formatting when it asks you and voila it installs onto your computer replacing the old windows.
