It crashes in the middle of loading a family. It pops up a message saying "this application crashed. It will now terminate." Or something like that. It's never done it before and won't stop. What do I do? Step by step, I'm not a real computer wiz.

Are you sure you have the system requirements for that game? Did this happen all of a sudden or you just started playing it?

These are the system requirements for Sims 2:
If you have a T&L (info about what T&L is below) capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM (such as nvidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 7000 or better) then you need at least:
800 MHz processor
256 MB RAM if Windows XP
128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 gigs of free hard drive space
If you have a non-T&L capable video card (such as TNT2, Intel, or Rage for example) then you need at least:
2.0 GHz processor
256 MB RAM if Windows XP
128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 gigs of free hard drive space
Recommened video cards (and the more video memory the better):
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Nvidia Geforce 4

Make sure you have the minimum requirements or else your game will keep crashing.

Edit: Then something is wrong with nightlife. Its an expansion pack so there might be a separate system requirements for that or maybe your computer installed it incorrectly. Try reinstalling Nightlife again.

an consumer-friendly reason will be your computing gadget is low on memory, and that particular part of the game calls for more desirable than you genuinely have. Or once you install it, it did not set up good, so that you would possibly want to attempt reinstalling it or maybe turning the pics all the way down to assist it run extra efficient.
