This will make your hair SUPER straight until it grows out, so be careful! When my daughter was in high school, she got a "spiral" perm, but soon found out it was way too much trouble to maintain. So she asked her aunt, who was a hair stylist, how to get all those curls out. This is what she told us to do: Buy a good home perm kit. Follow all the directions up to the point where you put in all those little tiny curlers. Instead of putting those in, comb your hair down as smooth as possible (no curlers), put on the solution and let the perm process for whatever the suggested time is for your hair. Don't move around too much. Then use the neutralizer or whatever the instructions say and complete the perm. Your hair will be STRAIGHT when it dries! Her hair went from "Shirley Temple" curls to "Cher" straight in about 20 minutes. I hope this helps.

Next time when you go to the salon, ask your stylist what kind of treatments she could do on your hair to straighten it. There are all types of salon methods that will chemically straighten your hair and may be really helpful, but you need to advice of a professional for that.
As far as perming it straight and there being damage, I'm sure there will be a LITTLE damage, because regular perms, dying the hair, using heat products, etc. all do some damage on the hair, but it doesn't necessarilly mean you can't counteract that by taking good care of it with vitamin rich products and deep conditioning treatments! Your stylist will be able to tell you what kind of damage it will create and what you can do to help that. Personally, I think that if you want straight hair that badly then you should go for it. Every 6 months is NOT that often.
Also ask your stylist what shampoo and conditioner and products she is using on your hair when she makes it so straight...then buy what she is using, they will usually sell that kind of stuff right at the salon.
Lastly, I HIGHLY recommend investing in a REALLY nice flat iron. I use the Sedu, which is an ionic ceramic flat iron. It is easier on the hair compared to most flat irons, and it works SO GOOD. Not only does it make the hair very straight, it gives it a shine and smoothness as well, that is not seen in many flat irons. (As in, they will make the hair straight, but theres a bunch of flyaways and it looks dry and fried.) I also have the Chi flat iron, which is very good too, but honestly, I like the Sedu better. Either way, they are both well worth the money...about 100$ each. I bought mine off www.folica.com Good luck!

Let me just say first of all, I have curly curly curly hair and I feel your pain. I have tried straight perms, straightening shampoos treatments and everything. And really to be quite honest with you it will never be straight, you could go to the salon and ask them how they get it straight but I have never had my hair totally straight, and I don't think it has anything to do with "self-esteem" I just think you are sick of dealing with it and trying to find some way of getting it straight. You can always call and talk to someone at an african american salon and see if some treatments they use would work, that's what some of my cousins have done but I've been told that the treatments and stuff are painful. So, hang in there I would try to talk to a hairdresser about it and see if the perm would work, it's an 8 hr long process tho...GOOD LUCK!

What you are looking for is either a *relaxer* or a *thermal straightening* service. A relaxer will cost you less money and less time, but the results will not be as good. A thermal straightener (aka "Japanese straightening") will cost considerably more and take more time, but I believe it is well worth the cost. The hair is left in much better condition and the effects last much longer. With the thermal the hair is left shiny and smooth and most people end up with a wash and wear result. You can expect 75% straightening the first time you have it done and even more the second time. Make sure you find a reputable salon to perform this service for you and someone with a lot of experience. This is not a service you are looking for a bargain on.

Perming your hair will create damage! and besides, even if you perm them straight, you won't wake up to beautiful hair every morning, you will still have to style them. First of all, get a good flat iron, not a cheap one. it makes a whole lot of difference. Also, use a serum in your hair to help keep in moisture and shine in your hair, it also helps the hair stay straight. Also, when you style your hair wuth the flat iron, just use smal pieces on hair, not a whole lot because it won't do anything! :)

having straight hair is fine --- but using chemicals to straighten it will cause harm to the hair --- if it's naturally curly enjoy it --- cause people with straight hair want theirs curly!
Go easy on those curls --- an limit those straightening treatments so your natural hair isn't damaged -and you end up spending mega bucks to get it back healthy------

use a higher setting on your curler. if that doesnt work, try spraying hair spray on one section of hair and then straightening that section. if that doesnt work, PLEASE DONT GET A PERM! it ruins your hair and makes it fall out more easily!
