I was just curious if anyone knows how accurate times are when using online map services like Mapquest ? For example from NC to NY is about 700 miles and Mapquest says it will take about 12 hours. Do you think that is based on driving right at the speed limit ? Anyone know if there is a site where you can enter your MPH to calculate travel time ? Thanks everyone.

They're pretty good, but they assume you don't go crazy on the speed limits. 700 miles in 12 hours is almost 60 mph. Figure you'll have to make some stops for gas, rest breaks, and tolls.

That's a pretty good clip, nevermind the congestion around DC.

map quest has been around for a while and might now be fully updated. it also doesn't count traffic or the traffic lights(whether or not you stop at every on). it is based on perfect driving ; going the speed limit making every green light , and no traffic.. map quest isn't 100% accurate but it is a good estimate.

Not very. We were told 4 hours and it took us about 2 1/2.

Not very. They are not adding in traffic, gas stops, eating, and other things, the closest I have ever gotten was using a program called Microsoft Streets and Trips.

I thought it wasn't accurate and decided to go against it once. I was in San Louis Obispo and wanted to go to Georgia. It said for me to go all the way down to L.A. instead of over the mountains nearby. I said hell, if I go over the mountains it will cut off miles from my trip. It cut miles down alright but took me all day to do it. In the hours it took me to do it I only saw two cars.
It would have only taken me about two hours to go to L.A.

I believe these map sites do account a little traffic. But not a whole lot.
