My pup isn't exactly a toy breed(i didint see him in the toy breed section). He is year old, 21 pound rat terrier. He's starting to have breathing fits (coughing weezing or sneezing), the weezing only used to happen in his sleep but now in happenes at least twice a day...i was looking at questions similar to mine and it looks to me that he might have kennel cough or collapsing trachea. My parents say that if it gets to serious then we'll take him to the vet but i'm afraid that if we wait he could pass away...i'm currently on vacation so i'm (obliviously) not near my vet...what can i do for my pup to help him breath better while i'm on vacation?

If you have someone who has a key to your house or can get your dog have them take him to the vet. Call the vet and pay for their treatment with a credit card over the phone. Not to scare you but I had a cat that caught kennel cough & we were on vacation & I had my step son take him to the vet as I described above. A few months later after treatment it seemed to recur, I took him to the vet they said he was fine and 2 days later he died. You should get him to the vet as soon as you can. But if something happens don't blame yourself like you're a bad pet owner you're obviously doing all you can to ensure his well-being. Also pray that never hurts.

I had a dog that had kennel cough due to being at the dog pound in the back warehouse, cold cement floors, in a cage next to other dogs, etc. Two days after adopting her, she came down deathly ill. We took her to the vet and she was there for 2-3 days on IV fluids and having lots of meds. It went away and never came back. But, the vet said that if she hadn't of gone in when she did, she wouldn't have made it another day. Kennel cough is very contagious between animals and very dangerous to them. It can, if left untreated, kill them. I remember our puppy (now 9 years old but living with my ex husband) was throwing up everywhere, couldn't breather right, couldn't eat, couldn't play, etc. She was sooooo sick she couldn't even walk into the vet. We had to carry her!

I would say to have someone take the pup to the vet ASAP. DON'T wait. The longer you wait, the slimmer the chances are it can live IF that's what it actually has. Only a vet can really tell what the pup has. I don't want to scare you, but I do want to urge you to, somehow, have the pup taken in to the vet ASAP to be safe and sure that it is fine.
