I am sometimes worried sick by the media blitz of advertising, which seems to think that america is a target audience rather than a nation of real people. I want to know from what level can individuals reeducate themselves and the world around them to focus on thier interior rather than thier exterior. It is our idea of who and what we are that seems to be constantly in conflict with the themselves and the world around them. Most people dont see whats good about themselves because they think the outside is all thier is to who they are--so that they do not bother to develop themselves and grow. How can one bring whats inside out to the world, rather than use whats outside to call the world to attention?

To answer your first question, its because so many of us are hooked on TV and the advertising media. We get our living advice from Oprah and Dr Phil....give me a break! Celebrities tell us how to dress and what to name our kids. Walk any mall, and you'll find people of all ages dressing and looking alike. Its all very superficial, very copy cat, and makes the clothing, cosmetic and cell phone sales people ( and others) billions of bucks every year. It is sad.The only possible suggestion I have is to turn off the TV, put away the damn cell phone, and concentrate on learning how to communicate with each other sans all the extraneous goodies. What you are suggesting, I believe, is that people be "in the world, not of it." Someone stated that a long time ago, but few people really listened. Or if they did, they interpreted the words to suit themselves. "None so blind as those who cannot see"...more old but very relevant words. Education can help, but unfortunately we live in a media-saturated culture that takes precedence over book learning and just plain common sense. Learning to live; that is "getting real" is an inside job...just like Sears ( LOL) "its all inside." And who wants to look inside with the world coming at you at you in technicolor all the time? Only a few. Have you ever read "Walden" by Thoreau? You would appreciate it.

You know, if people want to live in that fake world and keep thinking that that is what life is about, go for it! Its not my cup of tea and I got real about what life was really about four years ago when i started to question things like you are doing right now! I'm a spiritualist now and deeply understand things way beyond the imagination now and cant understand how i ever managed to function in life before ( B.C. awakening). Once you figure it out, you become a whole new person! Wow, i cant understand how people cant see it, its right in front of them and nobody gets it! OK, whatever. See you in the next life time floundering again.

Here is why I disagree with your logic. Image is ofcourse not everything but it helps the persons selfesteem. Why do people want to make money so they can buy a nice house? The spend their hard earn money to buy a house that LOOKS good. Why do people wear NICE clothes? I mean if you are not into the image at all, then you shouldn't mind living in an ugly shaq with bad weather and bad neighborhood and stuff. What will your children think? take a look at successful people in this world. They dont live in a crappy place? They live in a place that LOOKS nice. You think Bill Gates live in a normal house? Hell no! He bought an ISLand that have beautiful images and a house that LOOKS nice. You can live in your fantasy world where looks is not important but in reality, GOD created this earth to make it look beautiful. when you see something that looks nice, it makes you feel good about yourself. Wake up and smell reality. Now image is something but if you got a bad attitude, ofcourse doesnt matter how pretty you are, you will be ugly. But dont sit here and tell me that image is not important. Dont tell me that fat people doesnt want to look skinny and look good. Dont tell me that people rather see ugly disaster than beautiful blue skys. Wake up now!

Advertising shifted from demonstrating the usefulness of their product to trying to make people feel inadequate in some way and claiming the product could make them feel better.

There are still people out there who are interested in inner development. They just don't get their own TV shows.

Sadly, no one can see how big your cerebral cortex is. There is no operation to augment the size of your caring heart.

Until the world realizes that bright teeth and a great smile can't mend the blackness within one's own soul, you can only tend to your own house.
