In Switzerland you are required to serve 2 years. Then you are issued a fully-automatic rifle to keep in your home and your are considered part of the militia. And guess what? They have the lowest crime and murder rates in the world.

No, military service is not compulsory in all countries. You don't need a travel permit from the military in any of the countries that I've been to -- and I've been to a LOT.
If you're actually in the military yourself, you do need to have orders in hand when you travel. Either orders for official travel or leave orders for leave.

Military service is obligiatory only in some countries, Israel comes to mind.
Most industrialized nations use a volunteer army under most circumstances though.

in the US its an all voluntary force, I know some countries do require military service, not that bad of an idea but then again I wouldn't want any one there that didn't want to be, makes for a lower quality military if you ask me.

It is not obligatory in all countries, but if you are in a country where it is, and they consider you a citizen, then you can be stopped and questioned, especially at the border.

Well, for starters there is the United States of America where it is not obligatory.
Not a bad idea in that it worked in WWII and we got it over in a hurry.
