For 70 grand, you should be able to live very comfortably if you stay in Washington. Georgetown is pricy, but most of the rest of the town is affordable.
DC is expensive, but not nearly as bad as New York.
Lots of affordable restaurants in town, great food.

A single person making $70,000/year would be on the upper side of middle class. Not wealthy but you'd be able to afford an apartment or condo in one of the nicer neighborhoods. You wouldn't be able to buy a house, though, as the real estate market is pretty high.

I make a bit less than half of that and manage quite well. (Of course, I have no dependents.) Own my own place, a mile north of Georgetown and have been a NW resident since '74. Lived in Anacostia until '73.

in dc I would think it would cost of living would be high and I would say I would be just be getting by My husband said he would be getting out of there quick all the bars on the windows etc...
