a light golden brown, would red take more easily to it? Say I kept it that color for a month or so before putting a auburn color in it. I have light blonde hair now.

well it depends on what your desired result is. if you want it bright red then blonde is your best starting color. If you want a darker red then i would darken the color blonde your hair is. But if you dye it a brown type of color the red is most likely to wash out sooner and and more so than if your hair was a blonde type. Maybe if you dyed it the darkest blonde before brown it would achieve the result you want.

Golden colors do bring out the red in the tint as for blonde to auburn I don't know if I would try that one at home, maybe seek out a good stylist.

You should really look closely at the dye's base colors when changing hair color. Go to a beauty supply store and look at the color wheel so you don't overdo one base color and end up school bus orange or gunship grey. Red is a relatively easy color to put in hair but has many base shades, from gold, orange, red and purple, so be careful.

I would think that lighter hair colors would "grab" the color better that very dark hair...

I had my hair red once. If your hair is lighter the red will get to it easier.
