Brooklyn is a great place to live! Trust me I live there. It is very safe as long as you are in an apartment and locked up! Good places to live are Midwood, where I live, and Marine Park. The subway isn't that bad as long as you are with someone you know. Apartments in Midwood start at 1,000 dollars and apartments in Marine Park start at 2,000 dollars. Other buroughs that are nice are Cape Cod, Lake Placid, Saratoga, they are all really nice including Brooklyn! Good luck and I hope you find a nice place to live!

YES
>> What areas are better or worse than others?
the better areas: midwood, marine park, bay ridge, bensonhurst
>>How is the subway from there to Manhattan?
It depends on the subway line, some are better than others.
>> How much do apartments rent for?
A one bedroom starts at 1000/month
>>>Are other buroughs better?
Queens is just like Brooklyn
Staten Island is expensive, not near trains and have to pay tolls to get around the in/to city.

It depends where in Brooklyn. Even now in the hoods/ghettoes, Brooklyn is getting better. Most of the mobsters are gone, but in some places they are replaced by street gangs and drug dealers. It really depends on where you live. Why don't you check out www.turnhere.com and go to New York Metro section and find out more for yourself?
Ok, I will tell you which neighborhood to avoid.
Here they are:
East New York (notorious for dead bodies back in the days when the mobs rule, murders in the recent years, gun fights over drug dealings, robberies, street gangs),
Flatbush (it is getting better, but it is still some what "the hoods"),
Cyress Hill (for its proximity to East New York),
Coney Island (sometimes it gets wild and crazy things happen in the summer, and it means blood),
Bedford Stuyvesant (gun shots every once in a while),
Sheephead Bay (it is generally safe, but some robberies every once in a while),
Brighton Beach (there is a rumor about the present of the Russian and Eastern European mobsters),
Brownsville (it is ok, but the schools are not very good, beware of some bad teenagers),
Crown Heights (it is "the hoods"),
Bensonhurst (the rumors about Italian mobsters living there are probably myths, none the less use your common sense and becareful).

There are too many areas to name...are you looking to commute to Manhattan? If so - what area of Manhattan? Some subway lines are more direct than others, depending on where you want to go. Rents vary by neighborhood...so does the ethnicity and crime rates.

Brooklyn, NY is definately safe and cheaper than Manhattan. There are a lot of artists and POLISH PEOPLE living there and when I first moved to NYC, me and my boyfriend first stayed in an artists loft in Brooklyn. The artist was subleting his large loft while he was in Peru and allowed us to stay there for $900 per month. We only stayed there for 1 month. If I remember well it was a 10-15min subway train ride to Manhattan. If you are planning on moving by yourself, it's better if you found a roomate to split the rent. If you find more than one roomate, the better. It doesn't matter what borough you plan on living in (although I would avoid Manhattan and their "shoe box" apartment, but that is up to you) it's essential to have roomates. You can find roomates in NYC for any borough here-----> http://sharerent.com/p/sr/search.cgi
Or you can find apartments in NYC for yourself (no broker fees!) by the owners here----> http://newyork.craigslist.org/aap/
