Your question is too vague. What part of Mexico exactly? Most of Mexico is relatively safe with the exceptions of Juarez and surrounding border cities/towns (rife with narco-crime) and with the exception of Mexico city - which suffers from the second highest kidnapping crime rate in Latin America. If you're a US citizen you will not need a passport unless you plan to stay for months in which case a passport is legally required. If you're another nationality you do need a tourist visa/passport which you can get at the airport or through your travel agency. Some people traveling to the Southern states of Mexico (Chiapas, Yucatan) also get a passport to be on the safe side.

Use common sense when in Mexico - go through well traveled and known areas, stay with a group of people, etc. and you'll be safe.

The length of stay has nothing to do with whether you need a passport or not. You can get a 6 month tourist visa with only a drivers licence and birth certificate. The passport will be required soon by the US for travel in and out of the country. I would make every effort to get one.

Safety depends are where you are and if you look like you just fell off the back of a turnip truck.

Where in Mexico are you talking about? Hope not Nuevo Laredo.
Like previous letters you do not at this time are required to have a passport. A birth certificate will do and drivers license. If you fly in they may only give you 90 days ask for 180 if you want to. If you have only 90 days you can stay longer by applying at a government office and paying a fee. Mexico as safe as any American city.

At least until the end of the year you only need a birth certificate issued by the state you were born in. The one you get from the hospital is only a souvenir and not acceptable. If you are married and have changed your name to your husbands, you will also need your marriage license.

I have been to Mexico 11 times and never felt unsafe. Hopefully I will be going again in late October or early November. Just be aware of your surroundings and stay on the beaten path.

Well, I'm Mexican and I would say that Mexico is just as safe as any other country. There are variations of course, big cities (as any big city anywhere) are dangerous and smaller places not so much. Use common sense and all that........and I don't know about the passport :(

It is safe but like everywhere there are the "ghettos" that you need to watch for. And if your not american you might need a visa... Also you need a passport to travel to ANY country.

I've been to Mexico City countless times, and I've never been kidnapped. Just like other big cities (in any country, not just Mexico!) you have to use common sense.

BTW, from what I understand, it's mostly rich Mexicans getting kidnapped by their countrymen, not rich foreigners.

Yes and Yes, you might need a visa too depending on where you are from (a visa is not a credit card).
