The best food for any dog is what nature meant him to eat - raw meat and meaty bones - dogs are carnivores. He needs 10% of his "puppy" body weight each day, or 2% - 3% of his ideal adult weight. Chicken is good to start with. You don't say how old or how big he is, but Mastiffs are an enormous breed, and even a puppy could start with half a chicken. Organ meat is vital to his diet, so don't neglect to offer him liver, heart, etc. Go slow on the liver until you determine how much he can handle at a meal - too much liver can cause diarrhea - just a few bites at first. If you are interested in this method of feeding, there are numerous raw feeding resources on Yahoo Groups.
Good luck - enjoy your new pup!
Blessings,
Silver

I do feed raw to my mastiff but it takes research and careful meal planning. If you are going to do the raw route, do lots of research and talk to other breeders who feed raw because they grow at a rapid rate, at some points, they grow a pound a day! My girl had no growth issues on raw but I made a point to do my research. I have heard of several owners (including a littermate to my girl) who fed raw wrong and had growth issues.
If you are doing kibble, do not feed puppy food because it can make them grow too fast. You want something with a protein level of about 24% ...and try to look for the highest quality kibble you can afford. The Whole Dog Journal has a list of the top kibbles for the year. Some of the ones I've heard that mastiffs have done well on are Canidae, Eagle Pack Holistic, and California Natural.

I have a boxer and when she was is months old she became ill and it took some time to find out what was wrong with her. After consulting with Ohio vets, and an ultrasound later she had conjoined intestines. she lost a significant amount of weight and weighed only 20+ pounds at 7months. after surgery i wanted something to pick her weight up fast and still get the proper both growth. My vet recommended Eukanuba and she now is 11/2 and weighs 60+ pounds. the dog food is wonderful for protein and proper bone mass. Especially with larger breeds. I purchased the Large puppy and it has worked wonders for her. My vet was even surprised to see her at her check up.

Dry dog food. Canned dog food is moist because of the sugar content, a steady diet of which will result in tooth degeneration and digestive problems.

Please do not listen to the people telling you to feed raw food. This will ruin your dogs teeth and can cause other problems. Ever heard of e coli and salmonella? Dogs get it too. Royal Canin or Iams are excellent choices

buy some of the different kinds of name brand dog food and let your dog choose that's what I always do everytime I get a new pet or dog because things that might sound good to you doesn't always taste good to them
