Wild beasts always cover up their faeces and thus ensure that no tell-tale evidence of their being nearabout is left back for predator beasts to follow them. For covering the dirst they have to excavate earth with their forepaws. One can watch even city dogs where the roads are macdamised the dogs attempting to dig out soild for the purpose and when nothing comes out leave. The action remains a symbolic but has a survival value.
Another is wild beasts are wont to bury their unfinished meals if they cannot finish it in one seating to return to it leisurely. But it appears that they sometimes forget the exact location or may be the remants have alrelady been devoured by foxes ,wolves etc. The beasts dig here and there to find out and if found complete the feast.or abandon the effors and go away.Dogs are wild animals domesticated by man and yet the habits die hard. The dog usually bury the bone for later use and the digging is for taking it out.
Do not try to stop the habit or discourage it. It is primodial and hard to get rid off. If you are harsh about it the poor doggy will suffer from problems of split personality. He is condioned in a certain way and now if it is forced to give up the habit without fhyme or reason(as it must feel) the tension may generate a complexx. The dog may become dejected which would create problems.

Put a balloon in the next hole your dog digs! When he digs in the same place again the balloon will pop! The dog will be startled by the bang! This should be the beginning of the end of the digging of holes! May take a few times...just keep repeating! Till you get the desired results!

It is in a dog's natural instinct to dig holes ( of course depending on the breed). As for a way to stop it i am not 100% sure. My dog dug holes also...all over my yard and i kept tripping in them, lol. I stopped it by , whenever i saw her digging in the yard i had a little squirt bottle and i would squirt her and she would stop. after a while she did stop. But one thing you must remember is that #1 only squirt her/him when you catch her/him in the act! never afterward becaus the dog would get confused and the squirt bottle with them have no meaning to the dog. #2 Only use the squirt bottle when the dog is digging. Not if he/she is doing somthing else like barking or anything. This alos will confuse the dog. Good luck!

Most dogs dig holes to find a cool place to lay. When it is super hot outside for a long time they will tend to dig to stay cool. If the dogs stay in the house and when they go outside don't leave them out no more than 30 min and the latest is 45 min. The longer they stay out the more bad habits they pick up. If they're outside dogs then get a tiny pool and fill it up a little so they can walk in it, lay down in it. I once had a black Chow/Pitt and he loved the tiny pool. He would lay in it for a long time the others would just walk in it.

After they have dug a hole fill it up leaving a couple of inches and pouring amonia on it then covering it with the remaining couple inches of dirt. Dogs will normally dig in the same places. When they dig they get that strong amonia smell and don't like it. You have to be consistant with it and it takes a little while, but it does work. Been there, done that!!! I've also heard people that have trained their dogs to dig only in certain areas by buring bones and scolding them and taking them to the correct area when they catch them digging.

Dogs dig for number of reasons. You might try putting cinnamon where the dog digs. Since the first thing the dog does before it digs is sniff this usually a good deterrent. Remember that you will have to renew the cinnamon after it rains.

He is either hot of looking for something or he just likes to dig.I f it is because he is hot you should give him some shelter and i big bowel of water...and if he is looking for something...i don't know what to do so just get him another bone....and if he likes to dig you can get this stuff in a bottle...you sprinkle it on the ground and they don't like to walk in it....but don't put all over the whole yard because then he would have no where to run and play so if it is in your garden you can use that stuff..I'm not sure what it is called but you can Find some and petco or petsmart.

Because it buried something there in the past and it's now trying to dig it out. It's an instinct from it's wild ancestor like the wolf to bury their kill so that other carnivores can't find it, and they can eat it later.
It could also be the breed of your dog. If it is a Terrier, than it's instinct is always to dig and kill rabbits and foxes.
What I can't understand is why dog go around in circle chasing after their own tail.

My dog would dig holes for a few different reasons. Boredom and temperature are a couple biggies. Make sure the temp is good where the dog is and play with it more. and be patient, it will not change overnight.

Many dogs dig when they are bored. Play with him and exercise him more. If he is outside digging holes and you are not their to stop him, he has no clue it is wrong.
You must be their to stop it the second he starts.
