Alton Brown had a great method for storing fresh herbs. Like some other here have suggested, he put them in a zip lock bag with a paper towel, but then he used a straw to suck all the air out of the bag before sealing it all of the way.

Fresh basil is best stored outside the fridge. Chives can be kept in the fridge.
