If you can run a LONG DISTANCE race without opening your mouth, you are insane! There is absolutely no way you can do it. (In my opinion and from running races)
I ALWAYS breathe in thought mouth and nose, and breathe out through mouth and nose.
I am a pretty fast runner so I know that the way you breathe shouldn't affect you if you just breathe naturally.
So just breathe NATURALLY! However you want will work.

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I used to be able to run without ever opening my mouth, but my nose ran faster than I did. ;-)
The idea behind breathing through your nose is that it acts as an air filter, which is bypassed when you breathe in through your mouth. It also helps to keep your breathing under control.
Constant breathing in and out through the mouth, whether awake or asleep, results in overbreathing, which actually reduces the amount of oxygen available in the blood. This is the theory behind the Buteyko technique, mainly targeted towards asthmatics, and I overcame a tendency towards constant chest infections without medication by using the Buteyko technique.

Whichever you have the natural tendency to do. I breath in my mouth and nose and out only my mouth. Develop your own best way of breathing because everyone is different.
