Do you want dreads for fashion reasons or religion?

My Hubby has them he is a 'real' Rasta he is into the religious aspect of it more than fashion and I can tell you that to carry dreads for the wrong reasons COULD make them a burden on you, you may find it harder to find a job or secure a girlfriend even. I suggest you look at some Rasta sites to help you decide such as;

http://www.swagga.com/rasta.htm

Good luck with your quest!

locs can be a very positive thing the negative draw back is that you have to take care of them. If you don't want to smell, break or look unruly then you need to go for maintenance at least once a month. The grooming process will include a wash, deep steam conditioning and re-twisted. By doing this you will have beautiful locs that do not smell.

I love my locks now. They are pretty much long enough to have fun with them. But as a fat guy having a very short neck things were tough. First, for the first couple years the dreads would hit my shoulders and curl. Then, I could never find anything to wrap them tight but not cause a crease in them where the string for the wrap went across. Then I had to get them done almost every other week cause they would get really frizzy after a week or so. However now, I get them done every 4 - 5 weeks, don't wrap them after the 2nd day, they are long enough to not curl at the ends, and they define me now. I love them and I love the decision to get them.

I did dreadlocks. If you do it the real way it comes out really kool but you cant wash your hair.

If you do it the quick easy way, like I did, it hurts really bad. But it still looks kool. It ruins your hair though.

mine are half way down my back they are good dredds I like them but they get in the way when Im sleeping, they get me a lot of police attention when I am driving my car and small minded people are very negative toward a white guy with dredds like bob marley. Also the bob marley thing means you dont get taken seriously a lot of the time. people assume you smoke loads of weed and EVERYONE stares. So you have to like them to have them because its a way of life rather than a hairstyle And contrary to belief you can wash dredds just use unscented natural soap with no additives. (They coat your hair to make it look shiny and thicker but, like dirt, stop your hair natting up)so anyone who tells you otherwise is just a dirty little fecker ;p

i've been loc'ed for 18 years now. it has never kept me from anything i've ever wanted to pursue. i worked in corporate America, re-invented myself & went into acting, re-invented myself & added youth advocacy & social work ...while my locs continued to grow.

women admire me & men find my very beautiful. yet oddly enough if i am met with any resistance, it's never Europeans - it's always my people, which makes me so sad.

it just reminds me of how far we have to go in orchestrating our own healing. Sweet Honey in the Rock, the international all-women a capella group sings a song whose verse goes,

I am sitting here wanting
memories to teach me
to see the beauty of the world
thru my OWN eyes.

ashe' (amen)

peace

p.s.: i wash my hair regularly & i'm often told that my hair smells like frankincense & myrrh (for all of you that think that locs are nasty, dirty & smell, check out my page below)

Positive: You have shown your style and stuck to it i.e. freedom of expression.
Negative: Still many people believe that if you have dreadlocks you smoke dope i.e. discrimination.
