A Lab was hit by a car one week a go and the ball of the hip joint is fractured in a couple places. She limps. The vet suggested that is surgery was not to answer then we could keep her penned up for six to eight weeks in order to heal. There is no pet insurance. How far would you go to provide care?

Some hip fractures can be healed just by restricting the dogs activities. If you can have the surgery done and make payments I would do that. If not, try keeping your dog restrained with whatever means the vet recommends and keep loving him. He's part of the family, just short and furry right?

My husband and I have 2 Siberian Huskies that we consider part of the family - almost like kids to us. I would do whatever is necessary to to get them the medical care that they need. We have both of our dogs on an insurance plan through PetSmart. It costs us about $50 a month to have both dogs insured. It is well worth the money - it has saved us over $1,200 so far, and that is just on routine care - physicals, shots, yearly lab work, etc. Plus we can take the dogs to the vet anytime we have a question or problem with them throughout the year, at no charge. You really should consider getting pet insurance if you are going to own a pet - it will save you a lot of money in the long run, and it will give you peace of mind knowing that if something should happen to your pet, you will be able to afford to give it the medical attention it needs. Shop around for prices on the insurance though, because prices vary. At PetSmart you can get pet insurance for around $25.00 a month per pet. Good luck with your dog.

depends on the dog's age and how they will do through surgery. WE have a German Shepherd that blew out his ACL at 3 - he is a purebred and surgery was the answer. Now he is 10 and limps a lot, and if he were to blow it again, we think we would avoid surgery, as it would be hard on him at his age. A younger dog can handle surgery and recovery a lot easier than an older dog. It's a very tough decision to make... I wish the best for you in this tough decision.., I woul suggest visiting another vet and seeing if they have a payment plan if you think surgery is the answer

I don't think anyone can make the decision about what to do for your dog except you, no matter how much anybody tries to guilt you into it. If she's important to you, then you'll find a way. But if there's a chance she will never heal, you might want to HUMANELY put her down. If you love her but can't take care of her, look into a rescue group. They may be able to give you suggestions about finding her a new home with somebody to take care of her, or ways to do it yourself. They're usually a lot more personal and caring then vets' offices.

You can help relieve the pressure put on the hips by putting them on a strict diet and hydro-therapy. Hydro therapy is pretty much a treadmill that is under water. If the dogs are over weight that makes hip displacia worse. Swimming is also very good for their joints. Labradors love water so it won't be too hard getting them to swim.

I believe the real question is How far would YOU go? And only you can answer that. It depends on your resources, your time, and your commitment. Weigh all these things, and then make the right decision for you, making sure that any solution provides humane treatment for the doggie.

But just to answer your question the way you put it: I would spend everything I had, then sell my house, then beg on the streets in order to take care of any of my pets.

ok the question is how far would i go . the answer as far as possible i once spent $2500 on a dog to save it I know it dont sound like a lot but for us it is . i would get a second opinion folow the vets advice and do what ever it took to help the lab. but if the vets say it will suffer the rest of its life i would proably have it put down

I would go as far as I could. Financially and emotionally. There are plans set up like"pet care credit" and vets do work with loving, responsible per owners on payment plans. You do everything in your power to make the dog better. Without undue suffering, pain and a good prognosis.

It depends on how much money you have and how much you love the dog. I don't think penning him up for six-eight weeks is the answer - the leg will never heal and he'll be in agony. It may also get you a whopping fine for animal cruelty. If you can't afford the surgery, please give him a humane and peaceful death.

If you love your pet, then, there should be no question about what to do. Ask your vet about a stint to be put on his leg. This could actually help to heal it. I worked for a vet as a vet tech for over 2 years, and there is always a solution. Good luck.
