If you read the quran, which I have, in Arabic and in English, the term "Jihad" is an abused term. a "jihad" is a struggle, but it is an inner struggle to break a bad habbit like smoking. First part of your question is answered. Now for the "martyrs"... the Quran specifically outlines rules of warfare. You may fight to defend your land from an invading army, But, you cannot hurt any non-combatants, You cannot hurt even a tree. You cannot invade another's country. You must accept an enemies surrender and release him after he promises to leave your lands and not return. It actually says that. So, these "martyrs" that strap bombs to themselves and blow up a market full of civilians and themselves, according to their Quran are not going to heaven to be attended to by seven virgins. Their holy book specifically states that they have violated the rules of war as set down by God (or Allah if you will, same entity), and will therefore be going directly to hell. Now I would tend to believe this to be so, but in the end this will be up to God to decide what to do with these "martyrs".

If they really died fighting for Islam then they will go heaven insha allah, if they kill innocent people then they wont, only Allah has true knowledge of what they did.
Jihad is of two differant forms:
Inner jihad: struggling to protect yourself from commiting bad deeds, its a struggle of the soul.
The physical jihad is where you defend your land and poeple from destruction by people who declare war on you, only killing those who want to fight you and kill you wrongly.
Any one who claims they will get 72 virgins, WHERE IS YOUR EVIDENCE? Plz provide some.

I believe they will be judged accordingly... if they were truely doing it because they believe God wanted them to do it and they were mislead, they will be judged more favorably; if they were doing it knowing killing innocent people on purpose is wrong, they will be judged unfavorably.
The poeple who mislead them for political reasons to kill innocent people on purpose using God's name will burn in the worst hell imaginable. That's what I think.
