.... let alone having a "personal relationship" with him?

It's an act of faith--which is neither good nor bad on its own.

It is how people treat themselves and others on the basis of that faith that causes problems.

You can see "God" almost anywhere you look both beautiful (sunsets, oceans, plants) and ugly (tsunamis, fire, war).

Faith provides a God that bridges the gap between between people and a random, often brutally indifferent universe, for those that need such a bridge.

I cannot see or hear you, but I believe you exist because I just read your thoughts. There is ample physical, historical, archaeological and personal evidence for a reasonable person to conclude God exists. Faith is, of course, an important part of belief in God,but faith is only as good as the evidence that demonstrates the reasonability of that faith. In my own studies and experiences I have come to the conclusion that although I cannot physically see or hear God I believe He exists and I believe we can have a relationship.

Who says that it is impossible to see or hear God, or that He won't respond to you?
I think the problem is that people can't separate what is physical from what is spiritual. Of course, you cannot see God with your physcial eyes, or hear Him with your physical ears. Why would anyone think that something created could understand, let alone explain the entity that created it?
You can't provide physical "proof" that God exists. I don't understand why anyone would even try to. Of course, the only "proof" anyone could ever have would be in their own heart. People who haven't felt that proof won't believe in it, and nobody can make them. People who have will believe in it, and nobody will ever convince them not to. I've never understood why people waste so much time arguing about it in the first place.

Just like when you believe that you can always come back and win a basketball game when you're down by 20 points with 2 minutes left in the game.

It's all about faith in the end.

Because God is all around you in spirit, If you believe and have faith, you can pray to God through Jesus Christ, and then God will hear you, God does things for us that we take for granted all the time, you don't realize it but, we wouldnt't have all of our needs if it wasn't for God.
Also, God protects us from satan, and evil.
The world would not be if God did not love us, we just have to study Gods word and see the changes God can and does make in our lives, I know because I was a heavy alcoholic and when I accepted Jesus Christ into my life, all of that was gone, nothing else had ever made me want to change.

God has always been there, he doesnt necassarily have to directly respond to me instantly, I beleive that the answers reveal themselves throughout life which is why I have faith.
Or if I am really confused I read it up in the quran or hadith or a religious authority.

do you believe that light is going to come on when you flip the switch? You can't see electricity. It is same with faith. Faith is believing what you can't see. I question it all of the time but at the time of my mothers death at the moment she died I saw the smile on her face and I believe that was the power of God working in her life.

Jesus told Nicodemas-'you must believe first', it is the same today. If you want God in your life-you must believe He exist before He will show you. The world wants the proof first. Its kind of a catch 22 thing.

How can you believe in the wind? You can't SEE the wind, but you can feel it, You can't SEE God, but you feel him in your heart. You may be able to see the wind moving the trees and the grass, but if you look hard enough you can also see God moving in people's lives around you. You can talk to the wind, but it won't talk back. You can talk to God and he will talk to you...the question isn't if he's talking to you..the question is are you listening. It is about faith.

Well, it's like being a chat-room buddy with someone. Or maybe like loving a teddy bear. It seems real while it's going on, but from a certain perspective, its sad.
