Well, every software program uses memory and CPU cycles. Some programs are more demanding than others. Antivirus programs are notorious for using a lot of resources. To confirm that Norton is the culprit, use the Task manager. Ctrl+Alt+Delete and look at the Process tab. Scroll down the list and look for the resource hogs. The process' names usually give away the software program responsible for it. If you are using Norton Internet Security Suite then you have to take in to account that the suite includes: a firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware - each of which need some CPU cylces and memory.

Assuming you are using WinXP, 1Gb will be fine for browsing - other programs will slow it down and your HD will slow as it fills. Norton used to be bloatware until two years ago - they improved all their products (Antivirus/Norton Internet Security/360). So, if you are using Anti virus 2007, it will slow your computer more than 2009/2010. I prefer Norton Anti Virus/ Internet Security as I can't be bothered going into Answers asking how to remove virii off of my computer which has not been protected by the free ones.

Yeah, Norton for the Windows platform tends to start getting into everything. Kinda like Skynet. Now, while it does get into everything, it usually does a really good job of protecting/fixing your computer. I wouldn't rule it out, but be prepared to do some maintenance or deal with a slower computer.
