Likely because they're Christian and any belief other than their own threatens theirs and they've been taught that anyone who doesn't believe the same as them is evil.

I like your response, though. I plan on doing the same from now on.

Unfortunately, as time has progressed, people have gotten away from courtesy in general and religious overtones in their language. Many forget (or choose to ignore) the fact that this is NOT a Christian country but a country of religious freedom for all religions, so they take for granted their opinion and belief system and therefore expect everyone else to share both.

Being both a Christian AND a Druid, I empathize with you...and I apologize for my arrogant brothers and sisters in Christ for their lack of courtesy and respect...and I understand your rightful indignation and irritation.

In the United States, especially, we have gotten away from using term 'given name' for a person's first name.

However, although you are offended when they use the term 'Christian name' for your 'given or first name,' your answer, especially if spoken with a sarcastic tone or with anger inflected in your voice, would be offensive to most Christians. You might want to consider getting the message across in a more diplomatic manner; for instance: "I am not a Christian, so my given name is not a Christian name; however, my given name is..." You may find that an answer along those lines might trigger a conversation rather than an offense to them or you.

Btw, originally, a 'Christian' name was one that a person took on when they were baptized and confirmed as a Christian after converting to Christianity.

Just so you know... I'm a Christian and don't even know what a "Christian name" is nor how to get one nor why you would want one. I'm not sure what type of "Christians" are asking you this question but most likely either you or they are misinterpreting each other. Chances are this is a communication issue and not a religious one!

The only way for you to "Have a Christian name" besides being given it after your born. Is to be Christened, and from there you have your "Christian name".
Here are basically three sorts of Christening services:

· Services of Blessing, which are based what Jesus did when children were brought to him: “he took the children in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them” (Mark 10:13-16). These are about receiving God’s unconditional love. The service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child in the Church of England’s Common Worship book (p337) is an example of this.

· Services of Dedication, which are about the parents making promises about the upbringing of their children. These services are common in Baptist churches.

· Services of Infant Baptism, which declare the child to be a follower of Jesus Christ (but, of course, the service can’t make someone a follower of Jesus because that is their own personal decision.)

To some extent the different emphases above overlap in some cases, and an atmosphere of thanksgiving to the child’s birth and life is common to all three.

Only few "Denominations" do this event, all it is, is baptizing a baby after birth. Mostly the Church of England

They get offended because you are being rude. Couldn't you just say "I don't have one" and leave off the "Nor do I want one"?

Your given name could be considered your christian name. Especially if you have been baptized.

You are dealing with a mind set that insists everyone is a christian. Your answer, though, is also not in good taste. Leave off the "nor want one"

I believe "christian name" is just referring to your first name. It's just an old fashioned way of saying it! Everyone is different. Don't be so picky.
