For an even topping you should slice it but make it so that your cheese edges are slightly thinner than the middle because they will take longer to melt. I actually experimented with this where I had one slice with sliced and one with grated. There wasn't really a lot of difference but I found it easier to fill up the gaps with sliced because grated just goes everywhere except where it is meant to.

Definately sliced - Grated cheese always seems to fall off in the toaster!

Sliced cheese is better because it is much easier to melt sliced cheese then graded cheese.

Thin slices from brick cheese is the best. It melts if you add it right away to warm toast.

It is a matter of personal preference. American cheese slices fit nicely on toast and get nice and gooey.

Grated cheese melts faster; on top of sweet pickle or mustard or horseradish or tartar sauce or salad dressing and with a dash of worcester sauce on top of the cheese.

Sliced is much better and easier to put on the toast too. Plus its less effort!

I like grated cheese best with a splash of Worcestershire sauce on top.

block cheese that you slice and put on the toast before melting. I like colby jack. It is the "marbled" looking orange and white cheese.

Hey womble - under the broiler (watch it, though), same difference. Normally for melting and putting it over a large area, grated melts faster and is easier to spread. (Although you probably don't have a footlong/wide piece of toast -- or you're aiming for the record books!)
