I am having the same problem with my leftie. I looked up on the computer and it says the best way is not sit next to her but across from each other. Lefties see in mirror, so if they see you (across from her) they get the concept better. We also tried first, without the actual shoes, we had both daughters learn from tying on something big with big laces. We have a heating pad with big laces (to tie around your leg or whatever) once they get the hang of the motion then we move to the shoes. And they both learned before starting school. We told them that if they don't learn how to they can't go to school. And it worked. Good luck!!!

I love the replies from people who are clearly not parents - they actually think they know what this is like...
The easiest way, which was not the way I was taught is with the "2 bunny ears" technique. Make a loop with EACH of the laces, then just loop one under and through and pull. give it a shot. Most kids will not know how to do it already, so she'll be way ahead of the game. My son and his friends are 11, and they're still not good at it because so many of them prefer Velcro shoes!

Relax. Get some velcro shoes, and forget about it. I bought some really cool shoes that just have elastic. No big deal . She is not ready. Just like when we try something one year, it sucks, and the next time it's easy. Kids advance at all different stages. Remember all the articles telling us moms this. I do.....if only, I always would. It would save a lot of trouble. She will learn when she is ready. I don't know any adults running around without tying their shoes, do you?
When it is time to learn, try just making bunny ears on both sides, and crossing them like you usually do the first step.

5 may be a bit young to master this skill. Try to teach her the "rabbit ear" method. Make the 2 loops and tie them together. Most kids can tie their shoes tightly by the end of first grade.

loop, loop, swoop, or bunny ears. I taught kindergarten i made a cut out of a shoe and put holes so the kids can lace it and had my students lace the shoe and practice tieing it. by the end of teh they all knew how to tie their own shoe.

You may not like this, but persistence, patience, and making it fun are the tricks. How long has it taken so far, anway?
A month or two can seem like eternity, but it so isn't.
Good luck and enjoy the experience, instead of hurrying it.

have you tried the bunny years and hopping around the tree than into the hole, that is one that I remember from when i was little. The other one I remember is swoop, loop, and pull. Try them!! Tell her that she just needs to practice and not get up. She will learn how to tie them eventually!!
