I think the first thing we need to do is plug the leak, and vote people into office who are really set to tackle the problem as we want it tackled.
I do blame the government, but not because I don't hold the illegals responsible for breaking the law and stealing our services. It is that the government knew they were doing that and didn't protect us.
That is a betrayal. We never expected poor people from other country to care about health care and education for our own people, but we do expect our government to care and to protect those services.
If any amnesty is passed it needs to only account for those here and NOT allow them to bring in family through family unification as does the amnesty under the Senate bill. That quadruples the numbers right there. The same principle needs to govern numbers discussed for any guest worker program AFTER THE BORDER IS SECURED AND AN EMPLOYER DATABASE IS UP AND RUNNING. The numbers approved need to be total numbers, not base numbers to be augmented by unknown family member numbers.
The fact is, total numbers are the key when you look at our services like education. I don't know that we can afford both amnesty and a guest worker program. Our services and life for our citizens needs to be the controlling factor in the debate, not the desires of foreigners to come here.
I think we have a serious problem, but one we can address if we are committed. The problem I see is that our government is not committed, and dismisses our real concerns about viability of education and health care programs for our own people.
Dahlia Jihad - 'racist' is so old. Everyone is fully aware that this is economics and not a race issue. You undermine the credibility of any argument when you throw that in there.

Yes, it's the governments fault. You can't really blame the illegal immigrants because who DOESN'T want to live in the USA. There are tons of problems with having 20 + million illegal Mexicans in our country. Most are unskilled. They get paid cash under the table (no taxes). Many are criminals, child molesters, rapist, drug dealers, murderers, etc. Many of them refuse to speak the native language which is English of-course. They have ZERO rights and are NOT citizens -- yet they want to protest in our streets and wave the Mexican flag. They have no rights, yet they bash our government and it's policies. They have no right to receive HUD housing, food-stamps, welfare, medical, yet they get them anyway at the taxpayers expense (none of which they paid into). They reproduce exponentially. They send Billion$ of dollars back to Mexico each year instead of keeping it in our economy. Giving them amnesty is the worst thing that can be done, and will be one of many historical blunders the Bush administration has made. They are an ARMY of illegals that will someday take over this nation without a single shot being fired. The problem is huge, but we must do something now. In a way, they may start a civil war, how? If the Mexicans taking of America more so than they are now, there are still plenty of Red Necks and Rebels to exterminate them, and I would hail them for doing so. I think every citizen in the USA should do their part and report illegals so they can be deported. The problem with deportation is that they came back in. There are several reports of rapist and child molesters that are deported just to came back accross the border and keep doing it. If our government doesn't take some drastic measures then citizens will, and if citizens harm illegals they go to jail....Damn I hate this situation....

There really aren't SO MANY illegals. The blame surely lies on the employers who exploit these people. I think only real bigots can blame the people fleeing poverty imposed by US regulations and trade agreements for wanting to be here and wanting to stay. The fruits of thier labor was sure welcome, but now racism is driving them out, no one ever complained about the dishes not being clean enough before!
Look, if you want to actually be serious about this issue, rather than jump on the predjudice bandwagon of insecure whitefolk, then consider the facts -
The truth is that only a small percentage of crossings over the U.S.-Mexico border each year are by undocumented immigrants.
Approximately 250 million people cross the U.S.-Mexico border each year, making it the most traversed border in the world. Almost all of the crossings are legal, for purposes of work, shopping, tourism, etc. Less than 1 percent of crossings--somewhere between 1 and 2 million per year--occur without authorization.
Overall, according to U.S. government figures, the vast majority of immigrants who enter the U.S. each year travel legally.
The Department of Homeland Security estimates that 75 percent of immigrants in the U.S. have legal permanent visas. Of the estimated 25 percent who are undocumented, a large portion--as much as half, according to a 2004 report by the General Accounting Office--didn’t cross the border “illegally,” but simply overstayed temporary visas. So how is the new wall going to effect that, it isn't whatsoever, it is just more government pork.
Overall, the U.S., the wealthiest nation on the planet, takes in only about 2 percent of the world’s total immigrant population. And today, the percentage of the U.S. population that is foreign-born is lower than it was 100 years ago.
We are so well off here, it is disgusting to me that people here are complaining in the least about what "illegals" take from them, it is superstition and lies based on fundemental racist fears.
These same arguments made by Tancredo et al were made about Blacks in the 50s. It is white superiority, it is nonsense.
I am ashamed of this country for falling for such a basic political scam, ashamed that racism is so real still, so present in your minds (not all of you, and not you who asked this question).
We need to remove the plaque on the Statue of Liberty, it no longer applies to this country, the Frech were wrong about the nature of this land. Perhaps a Hitler quote would be more appropriate?

Is government totally at fault. Would not some of the blame lie with those who hire illegals? However, it seems the brunt of the problem stems from a government [federal and state] that provides illegals with everything they need to remain in this country comfortably - social services, education for the children, hospital care - all things the taxpayer's money goes for. If my tax money must be spent somewhere, would it not be better spent guarding our borders and deporting illegals. By the way, America is a melting pot - always has been - and that is good, but it should not be the meal ticket for anyone who wants to get in without "paying the dues."

Yes its the governments fault. And really that leads to businesses are really at fault because they profit from them being here and so they lobby to prevent real immigration law and enforcement.
The hole is not too deep. If we don't stop it we'll soon let them take over and it will be too late.
Add more border security. Enforce laws that make it a huge crime for businesses to hire illegals. Take away all governement assistance that is paid to illegals. Take away the benefits that illegals get and they'll stop coming illegally.
I have no doubt this is the greatest country in the world and they will still come. But take away the rewards for illegal entry and they'll all get in line and come the proper way.

I can't blame this issue on "one specific" factor. I feel the Government, employers, illegals, corrupt Mexican officials all have created one giant mess that is going to take a LONG time to clean up.
I got to go with DAR about securing the border, stopping the flow and electing politicians who are working for US and not big business or outside interests.
I also COMPLETELY understand ENLIGHTENMENT's comments.......so much more so....everyday that I read and watch and listen to what is going on.
When I first started posting I said this was a political ploy used to distract ALL OF US from the real problems. I don't say that as much anymore. I think this issue has "lit a fire" and "opened some hearts" and I think some good things are going to happen.....even IF it was supposed to be a "political smokescreen"

Ahhhhh ...Enlightenment: I don't know where you live (what planet) but where I live, the population of illegals is almost at 50% of the population now (Cal). The schools are teaching class in Spanish, forcing English speakers into other areas or into private schools. The schools are going broke because of this.
People I know who do yard care and the same labor that is being done by illegals, complain to me of the competition that cripples them as US citizens. I am associated with the medical professions and I know first hand that the influx of illegals is breaking the Med. establishments financially.
Stop being such a beserk nay sayer with false quotes that carry not a shred of truth.
Sheeeeesh! Where did you come from!? Are you an illegal disseminating false, propoganda type info?

I also think the government obviously has part of the blame, but not only the U.S. government but the Mexican government as well. It doesn't seem that the Mexican government is doing anything to prevent its citizens from leaving. Maybe if their government put some effort into improving the quality of life for all its citizens then they wouldn't feel compelled to leave. I honestly don't believe that most of the immigrants that come over from Mexico do so because they want to be Americans. They take pride in their home country, but just don't want to live in it.

Next week the house is suppose to hold hearings on immigration which we hope bring enough insight to what the goverment is actually thinking. Yes the Goverment controls the borders and what comes through these borders and thus far they have failed to secure the border as the main motto of the day is secure the border which means the goverment let that area of the U.S. get out of control. Now that elections are coming up, it will be insteresting to see what do the people really want.

Yes, I totally agree with you. It is just like the drugs that continue to come into our country. They ( The Gov't) is fully aware of where most of the drugs originate from, but, yet really don't try to stop it. The problem with Illegal Immigrants has grown to a point where it is almost impossible to control
