My female kitty is 8 months old and Ive had her since she was 6 weeks old. Shes a house cat (i live in a flat) and shes been spayed. Shes a lovely playful bundle of fun, she loves to purr! I was wondering whether I should get another kitten so she has a friend, and do you think I should get a girl or a boy?

I definitely would! Our two kittens LOVE playing together! It keeps them occupied when you are gone and hilarious to watch! I'd probably stick with another female. Just make sure you introduce them appropriately (there are web pages explaining this) so your current kitty doesn't think she is being replaced... And let them figure out who is dominant...they have to work it out between themselves.....just keep an eye on them when you do it if you need to separate....

Most pets like to have friends. It can be a great idea to keep her company if you are ever away from home (like when at work). While some pets prefer being the only pet, they can get lonely when by themselves. Having two cats, the cats will tend to play and clean each other. This may actually provide for their lifespan to be extended. Just keep in mind that the vet bills will be x2. As long as that is not a concern, getting a friend for your kitty sounds great. Whether boy or girl would be a preference. As long as the pets are fixed, it shouldn't be much of a concern. Having two girl cats may be like having a mother daughter relationship form, or a sister relationship form. Whereas, having a boy and girl could be cute too. Just remember that male cats tend to spray to mark their territory. Remember that your new kitty's friend will also be your new kitty too. Have toys for them and introduce them gradually to prevent an jealousy.

It's really up to you. The most important thing to consider is can you afford two cats. Remember you need to get it fixed, vaccinated, food and be able to afford any emergency that may come up along with the medicine. If you do, get a female, same sex of the kitten you have and a few months within the same age range. I have two female cats and adopted a sick stray male cat. They do not get along, I believe because of the sex difference and age range. They are four to five years apart. You should always keep your cats in the house unless you can be out with them in a safe secure place. Do you have a large place where they will be comfortable inside most of the time? Things to consider but I think if you keep the same sex and age then they should do alright and be happy together and provide you with a lot of entertainment, fun and love.

Cats will generally learn to get along... I have three cats about 1 year apart each for age... Each time I got another cat, I had to place the new kitten in a separate room when I was away during the day... Make sure to put a separate litter box, food and water bowl in the room for it also...The cat that was originally there always seemed to try and exert dominance... within a few weeks they all seemed to get along... All my cats are female and spayed... I would bring out the new cat during the evening when I could watch for the older cats to try and be "mean" to it, that way I could try and control "damage"...

Yes!! I used to be a one cat person. Two are so much better, they entertain each other and snuggle together. They'll entertain you more also, just watching them when they're together and saying "awwwww"! I don't think the sex would matter. I've got 2 girls. My friend has a girl & boy. (all fixed of course!). Nows the time to get another, while yours is young. Two are no more work for the owners than 1.

Depends how much time you spend at home.

If you are out a lot (say more than 4 hours a time) I would get another kitty as a play mate. Especially as she is a house cat she will get so bored as they need stimulation.

I have to cats that are sisters and they are in when we are out so we know they are safe and they have each other for company.

Not sure about sex, just get one with a nice temperament and be patient as some 'adjustment' time will probably be needed.

I suggest that you stay as you are! I have two cats and cats quite happily plod along without other cats for company. I bought two sister cats (to keep each other company) and they never sleep or play together. Getting a new cat always creates tension for the existing cat and you can find that your clean cat suddenly has "accidents" around the home. Cats can get very emotional about any kind of change (in my experience anyway)!

No, Ive made that mistake tooo many times!
One sweet cat turns into a full on hell raiser when another lives there too--plus she may feel jealousy, so if you have the time to love up on her & play with her daily I firmly believe you shoud NOT get another cat. She sounds very happy, and cats are fine w/out others-when you are gone they sleep all day anyway.

Ive had one that I rescued in 1994 and he is perfectly happy alone. I tried bringing in another kitty & he was very mean to it, probably thinking it was a threat to HIS domain.

But there are always exceptions. lol

My cat doesn't like any other cats. Cats are very territorial. Maybe have a friend bring by their cat and see how your cat acts - friendly or hissing? Since your cat is the boss of the house now, get a younger cat, so she can maintain her position. If you get another cat, it's also possible that they will not like each other first, but then get used to each other.

Your poor kitty probably gets bored and feels lonely when you are not around. 8 hours of work can feel like an eternity to a cat. Go find her a friend. I have found that cats almost always seem happier when they have a friend to play with.
