There are many websites that will tell you about specific breeds. I would be sure to thoroughly research a breed BEFORE getting it. I work to find rescues for animals at the shelter that will be euthanized. There are so many dogs in there that people have gotten and then found out they bark or dig or require attention. Dogs are a responsibility like children so please do research the breed well first. Are you wanting a guard dog or watch dog? There is a difference. Watchdog pretty much just alerts you to someone, not attacks. Be prepared for this dog to bark. I have seen so many people turn their dogs into the shelter because the dog barks and it is sad because they die. Will you have a lot of time to spend with the dog? Will it be exercized regularly? Do you have time to train the dog? These are considerations you need to make since this also goes hand in hand with the breed you choose. Some dogs take more work than others. Feel free to contact me with more information in what you are looking for and I would be happy to help you.

Our friend has a border collie that he rescued as a puppy - and she is the most protective dog I've ever seen. If she doesn't know you, she snarls and stands in front of the door. However, if he tells her that someone coming to the door is 'okay' - then she is friendly to them.
I think his training and bond with the dog is more the reason for her being so good - a trainer might help, or spending lots of extra time socializing a puppy.
Siberian huskies and labs I've seen are very neurotic - they are pretty but need a lot of room to run around and don't like being cooped up.

I would suggest a boston terrier they have the bulldog look so some people are a little intimidated just from that look. I have one she only weighs 15 pounds she sent someone running out the door. But the thing is she has never bit anything in her life and don't have a mean bone in her body. It was a stranger that didn't know anything about my dog, she was just barking at him and the way she came by the door i guess startled him a little. Boston terriers are great with children also and are very loyal to their owners. I am not particular about boston terriers either never wanted one. But for some reason I fell in love with this certain boston terrier and it is the best thing that has happened to me. good luck

Go to a Shelter or Rescue group and they will point you to the exact dog you want...You need something that Barks.Doxies are Yappy little things...They would make great little Watchdogs and they are not scary at all..Boxers would be good.It depends on the dog really..I'd opt for a shelter /rescue pet who I knew was a barker~Good luck..Happy Hunting

Okay personally my family has a Black lab/chow mix. because of the lab she is really friendly and protective and because of the chow she makes a good guard dog. But you should defiantly get a mixed dog. because if the dog is mixed it has bred out most of the defects in their pure blood. Like labs normally get really fat and have bad backs. and Chows well they have trouble walking. But my dog is 13 years old and still acts like a puppy.
Have Fun.
Dogs are a blast

It depends on what you want, a small dog? They can bark and let you know someone is coming, and some of them don't shed. A bigger dog? They can also bark, but they take more work than a smaller inside dog. We have both, so I know!

Go to the shelter, find a dog you fall in love with and get it. If you two work different shifts, there will be someone home with the dog more than a "traditional " family. PLEASE adopt a homeless, lovable dog. Everyone deserves a second chance. Think on it??????????????????????? :):):)

Minature Pinscher, they are the greatest dogs. I am somewhat partial because I love one but they meet your needs you listed.
Try looking up IMPS for dogs that need a good home.
