Of course it's a ploy ... this administration had no intention of doing ANYTHING about illegal immigration until the issue became too hot a potato to ignore ... they may have to pay lip service to border control now ... but if the pressure lets up, they'll slip back into their bad old ways ... so keep the pressure up! Border enforcement is too vital an issue to let them get away with not doing their duty ... and three cheers for the sheriff ... I saw him interviewed on television, and he was by far one of the most convincing people I have seen in a long time ... long may he stay in office ...

I do not think the issue is a political ploy. It is real issue which affects every citizen and legal resident in this country. I do however think that the politicians are skirting around the issues for their own reasons. They want the "minority" vote of the Hispanic people, but they also want to keep the votes of others so they skirt the issues and don't really do anything to solve the problem.
The fact is, if people who are hungry, starving and desperate can get here and stay under the radar of immigration, so can a terrorist. It is also abhorrent that these people who are here to support and save their family have to work and live in inhumane conditions.... Is that really what we want? The fact is they are not taking jobs that Americans won't take, they are working in conditions that Americans won't stand for. We have rights and we know it, they have none because they are here illegally.
Politicians do not want to recognize this because they are trying too hard to make everyone happy so they can get re-elected. Who cares about upholding the law!!! That is why these people are called ILLEGAL Immigrants. We are a country of immigrants, and I believe that most people welcome those who come here legally to improve their lives.

I don't think it is such a political ploy. I live in Scottsdale and I have noticed when I drive to work, the Home Depot/Walmart parking lot has police officers there and the illegal labor workers are noticeable gone. I love Sheriff Joe and have voted for him twice. I think that he has had an impact on areas of Phoenix that were once over flowing with illegal immigrants. If this is an effect of a political ploy, I am for it.

I wonder why after the deadline for 2,500 Nat'l Guard to be at the border, only 483 are there. However, I lay that and the non-enforcement policies for our immigration law over the last 6 years at Bush's doorstep.
I think a number of politicians are completely sincere on the issue.
Will they use their position in the election?
You bet.

Most Americans have been telling our government that illegal immigration is a big problem. Just until recently they finally listened and decided to do something about it. Unfortunately their motives weren't to fix the problem but just to make the right political move. Our politicians don't get it, this isn't a Democrat-Republican issue. This is doing what's right and enforcing our laws. We also need to punish those who break our laws.

It absolutely is. As of March, the vast majority of Americans had no concern with this issue (according to Gallup polls). Then, a group called the Minutemen (out of AZ primarily) began contacting their representatives. This is a good example of the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Then the media picked it up and off we go....

The immigration issue is smoke to keep us occupied with something other than the realization that our politicians are evil and our young soldiers are being blown to bits on a daily basis

Not only is it a ploy for the elections, but it is a red herring keeping us from thinking about Iraq.
