I have a movie on DVD, but it's very big. Is there any way to transform it into a VCD format? It's OK if I will have to forfeit the quality.

A DVD-ROM, like the one you would borrow from your local Blockbuster, usually contain 6.5GB to 9GB of worth of video files. A single layered DVD blank can hold up to 4.7GB. A CD blank holds up to 700 MB, Usually, movie studios fit a full length movie on to two VCD disks, 2 x 700 = 1,400 MB (or 1.4GB). DVD Shrink can only compress video files to 4.7 GB and programs similar to DVD Shrink do about the same level of compression. What you need is a video converter program to compress the movie in to the MPEG-4 format. Don't worry about the geek language. MPEG-4 converters can compress video files to 1/10 of their orginial size and still retain good video quality. There are free as well as commercial software available. Starting with the commercial software, Nero Recode is probably your best bet. The Nero 7 suite will cost you $ 89 USD. However, you can download and try Nero 7 for 30 days. You can download load it off their site at www.nero.com.

As for the free software, you can try AutoGK. AutoGK converts DVD video files in to the DivX format, which compresses the movie to 1/10 of its original size but still have good video quality. AutoGk is not as straight forward as Nero but it does get the job done. The download site is http://www.autogk.me.uk/. There is an excellent AutoGK guide at http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/autogk.htm.

Unfortunately, most standalone DVD players do not support MPEG-4. But DVD drives on a PC using Window Media Player is not a problem. I successful copied movies on to 2 CD's and played them on my Sony DVD player with no problems. The video quality is comparable to VHS.

Since VCD uses mpeg1, you'll need 2 CDs anyway - because you can't put the whole movie on 1. Besides, the quality (picture) is really bad with mpeg1, so consider shrinking it to a normal dvd (and buy a dvd-burner). You'll get better quality and since the form factor (dimensions of the disc) of a DVD is the same as a CD, it save you space (1 DVD instead of 2 CDs).
