To answer questions we don't understand yet. Long ago, people created gods to explain volcanoes, thunder, and so on. In the future, I think science will disprove religion.

To act as a moral guideline for social and individual interactions. People can be monsters... Some form of guidance in regards to 'right' and 'wrong' are required, with suitable condemnation for violating those guidelines.

Religion is required to check the savage in us...which is forced to shut up by law...but is ready to strike when law is sleeping.
religions give a lollypop of heaven... or fear of hell...to keep the savage in discipline..
religions are making us ready for our next evolution..which is spirituality...and finally divinity

it funtions like any group thinking. mainly, they have to get ride of any contradicting ideas. they also have to set it on something that the majority can agree upon. also, they have to have a common goal. i think there are some other factors in it, but I can't remember them all.
