Sunburn must heal at it's own pace but you can help it along.
Home treatment includes:
cool showers or baths
avoid creams or lotions that can hold heat inside (oil based)
drink lots of fluids
motrin or tylenol for pain
see doctor if you have blistering
stay out of the sun
if you must go out, keep sunburned areas covered
you can use OTC preps designed specifically for sunburn (to numb the pain and remove redness such as Solarcaine or aloe gel)

Cover the sun burnt area with aloe vera gel for at least 20 mins, may need to repeat 2-3 more times until healed depending on the severity of the burn. I've tried other methods, but aloe vera, seems to work the quickest.

Try to get the aloe vera in the most natural form possible, ie. no or little chemicals added,..fresh plants work the best, but there are commercial gels that will do the trick.

Do not use any other moisturizer or lotion for the time being, since they may contain chemicals that will irritate the sunburn.

Aloe vera is the best all around topical remedy for sunburn. However, make sure to use the fresh aloe leaf gel, or an edible quality gel. Most of the cosmetic preparations contain parabens, a very toxic preservative, and other hard to pronounce, probably dangerous chemicals.

Also, eat green foods - beta carotene and generally carotenoids as a whole (there are over 300) are "nature's sunscreen" and "sun recovery" substance - and make sure that you are getting plenty of fat soluble vitamins like E from your foods, e.g. nuts.

what works is a cool shower and then applying aloe vera gel on the burn several times a day. I noticed that the redness and pain is mostly gone by the next day and is replaced by a tan...works depending on the degree of burn

Try Solarcaine Aloe extra burn relief. Any aloe-based product is best - products like solarcaine have added ingredients to help ease the pain as well (like lidocaine). Keep the area well moisturized and it will be less likely to peel.
