Make sure your machine meets the minimum requirements...then scrap it and buy a new one because just having the minimum will mean your machine is slower than molases in January. XP is a resource HOG.

It's fairly simple - get a Windows XP upgrade CD and key (or full retail version - either will work), put in the XP CD while you are booted into Windows 2000, and when going through the wizard, select the option to upgrade. (Because of known issues, it is best to uninstall your anti-virus software first and reinstall it as soon as XP is on the machine.)

Before upgrading to XP, it is also best to make sure you download XP Service Pack 2, and disconnect your machine from the internet while installing. Then install SP2 - once done it is safe to connect your computer to the internet. The reason for this is the many blaster and sasser-type viral worms still travelling around the internet will infect your computer if you don't have your system updated and you are connected to the internet. If you have a router with a firewall, you'll likely be OK, but still best to do this to stay on the safe side.

1) make sure you really want to upgrade...win 2000 is a very good op sys, very stable.
2) if you decide, buy the UPGRADE XP Home edition..about $95., put cd in computer and the computer will do the rest.
If you computer is older than 5 years, stop here and back up...forget XP on this computer. Too many problems too many drivers that you will have to go find, your modem may or may not work, etc. And XP needs at least 512 Megs of memory to really work well. I prefer a gig of memory.

Buy a copy of Windows XP, turn on your PC, insert the Windows XP disc and restart! The windows XP setup will appear during restart instead of Windows 2000.

first of all you want to make sure that Xp will run on your system

Recommended: 300 MHz CPU and 128MB Ram

233 MHz CPU,

64MB Ram

2 GB hard disk space.

2000 only accepts upgrades for xp Pro and not home edition im pretty sure.

I use 2000 professional and have used winXp...to me, 2000 pro is way better because i dont need "colors" and pretty stuff, i want a system that works without problems, the minute you put xp on your system you will have over 30 updates which also take space.

Just put your win XP Cd in drive while in win 2000, it will ask you either to upgrade or install XP as fresh installation. The procedure next to follow are fairly simple.

Its better to upgrade as the files, programs and other settings are left as it is.

I purchased a copy of Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade and loaded it and I haven't had any problems using Windown XP. It isn't that expensive and is easy to load.

First check to make SURE you computer meets all the requirements to install XP. The requirements can be found at Microsoft's site or on the XP Box.

*IF* your cmputer does meet the requirements, simply buy XP and install it on your computer.

go to microsoft.com and you can download Windows XP Service Pack 2 via Microsoft Update or buy the CD for free (you still need to pay around $2 shipping and handling)

or

go to walmart, or target, or whatever and buy the CD at the retail price

if you really want to upgrade though wait for Windows Vista to come out and upgrade to Vista
(but make sure that you have the system requirements go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/systemrequirements.mspx to find out if your system is ready or not)

good luck

make sure you meet the minimum requirments and get a XP cd, and upgrade, the CD will walk you through it. If you dont meet the specs, upgrade, but all you will have to upgrade more than likly is your ram or maybe CPU chip. make sure you have 1.5GB for windows xp if your not going to format.

*best answer please*
