can a camcorder be kept on me in my carry on? or will that damage the camera when it goes through the xray machine?

I keep my camera with me in the cabin. I sometimes take video in-flight! You can send your camcorder through with your checked bags, if you feel comfortable that you won't lose the bag. I don't because it is easy for me to replace clothing, but the memories captured on the tapes cannot.

Xrays have an effect on Film, not video tape. Magnetism may erase your tapes, but you can still use them to record new video. Cameras never receive damage from Xrays, unless you physically bash the camera into the machine. :)

Contarary to the other answers to your question, I would reccomend packing the video camera in the check in luggage. I have my camera inside its case, and I wrap this with clothes which I would be packing into my suitcase. Generally my suitcase is full, which will make sure that nothing inside the case is moving around. I have done this at least 10 times so far and my camera is spotless and works a treat. Generally my hand luggage is not tightly packed as my check in luggage which leaves chances for the camera to move inside the hand luggage, which may not be ideal. So I would reccomend securing the video camera in your check in luggage, unless you want to use it before you reach your destination.
Xrays dont damage camcorders or even still cameras using films. Irrespective of whether it is carry on luggage or check in luggage, it gets Xrayed, but Xrays doesnt affect cameras so dont worry!
Have a nice holiday!

You should keep it in your carry-on so that it doesn't get banged around too much, lost, or damaged by the x-rays. If you have it in your carry-on, though, you will need to take it out and tell the person that's checking the carry-ons that it's your camera and you'd like them to hand check it instead of sending it through the machine. They should be all right with that, and your camera should fare just fine.

I highly recommend keeping the camera, and anything else you consider sacred with you when flying. Your checked luggage not only gets banged around, but is liable to be opened and inspected. I personally do not like the thought that anything I consider valuable to me just happens to be something an inspector thinks he values more than me. Additionally, I have seen luggage fall off the carts taking it to the aircraft and bust wide open in the rain.

I hope this helps.

I would recommend keeping it with you on carry on. It wont be damaged. If is is a bigger camera it might be an inconvience though.

I try to keep as many valuables as possible OUT of my luggage, especially now a days when you can't lock it.

It does not damage through the xray machine. The damage might be for not pack it good enough in your suitcase.

i always travel with it as carry-on, because it doesn't count as a piece of luggage that way.
