like focusing the picture so the focused person will appear sharper/more vivid because of the blurred background

What you want to do requires understanding "depth of field". This is the range of distances from you that the camera is in focus. It's like a "zone". You need to get a setup so that the person is within the depth of field, but everything else is not.

Depth of field is shorter (smaller) when the lens is open wider and telephoto is zoomed in.

If your Canon has manual controls, set the Aperature to a low f-stop. Set the shutter speed to a fast speed. If not try the Portrait scene setting.

Set the person as far from any background as possible.

Zoom your camera in close to the person. You may have to back up farther away.

Set the Focus to Center. Focus on the person and take the shot.

This will probably require some experimenting until you get the right combination. It's a lot easier if you have full or partial manual controls.

Have Fun!

Most of the little Canon digital camera has automatic settings. A lower 'F' stop might help.. But without that, I would try moving back a bit and try to get your subject framed in the shot at around maximum zoom in!! When focused on your subject, the background will be more out of focus.

The easiest way to acomplish this is a few thing...
1)Put the camera in Portrait mode(that opens the apeture up and gives less depth of field)
2)Zoom the camera out to the longest zoom that it has
3)Have the subject stand at least 5-6 feet away from anything in the background.

What you are trying to achieve involves adjusting the Depth-of-Field which is based grealy on the Aperture of the camera. Look for the word Aperture or Depth of Field somwhere in the manual of the camera.

i'm not really sure i would liked to learn that too because i have a canon powershot also, but i think it could work on macro mode. Try looking it up on the manual.
