The Jesuits are a Catholic religious order that sprang up to counter the protestant reformation. They are (traditionally) a primarily missionary/promotional order. They run a lot of charitable organizations and schools. I'm not sure if they have friars or if they're all priests.

John S - The Jesuits were not mercenaries. Their founder was a mercenary, but due to a battle injury that kept him bed-ridden for a while, he contemplated life and God -- and then started the Society of Jesus, encouraging people to act *peacefully,* as if you were in Jesus' very presence.

They have been around since 1534 formaly ordain by the pope in 1537. originally they have three goals: Founded superb schools throught Europe(they did), Convert non-christians to catholicism(they do) and stop protestantism from spreading(no longer they do this). They have been everywhere,(japan,latin america ect).Today is the second largest religious order of priest of the Catholic Church with over 20,000 members, on six continents.

You got some fair answers, pretty good. But they were mercenaries, not missionary's, dispatched to persuade (sword) protestants to recant. They murdered many, many thousands of Christians. They are still around today.
