I think it helped her, also that she was an only child until 5 months ago

If your daughter knows that you are never too busy to help her with a problem, then what you're doing is fine. A child needs to learn how to entertain herself. But don't think that she doesn't need your attention, just because she's playing a game by herself. She needs to know you're there for her. She is only 8. Of course, this is always assuming that she gets enough outside time (running, playing on swings, etc. to get her exercises and doesn't lead a totally sedentary life in front of the television and that she has friends her own age at school and play dates.

I have an 8 year old son who is an only child. I know that there will come a time when he will not be interested in spending any time with me because he will be too busy hanging out with his friends. It is only natural.
As such, while he still is at an age where he wants to spend time with his mother, I give him as much time as he wants.
My house is a mess because if he wants me to sit and watch the baseball game on television or a movie with him, I do it. I don't spend a lot of time going shopping, talking on the phone or reading (which I love to do) because if he asks me to watch him play his PS2, I do it.
It is my sincere belief that the amount of time we are willing to give our children when they are in their younger years will determine what our relationship will be when they are older.
Are you familiar with the old Cat Stevens song about a father and son's relationship? I think it is titled "Cat's in the Cradle".
Good Luck to you and your daughter.
