Meditation is a very good practice. And to the above writer, there are many Christians who meditate with a Christian based method. Praying is great for talking to Jesus/God, but meditation is a place to hear the answers. Use them together and you've got it all.

Meditation helps to focus the mind, and to help distracting thoughts from overwhelming the mind during day-to-day living. But the only way to understand who we are and what we want is by living "in the moment" at all times. By keeping aware and alert to what we experience, we can learn more about ourselves and what happens when we interact in the world. Meditation is a good tool for making the mind capable of this living awareness, but meditation alone will not bring you self knowledge.

One has to practice.
To your question, yes, meditation is the ONLY WAY to be aware.
All your daily activities are outer journey. Whereas, meditation is an inner journey.
